"OFFICIAL: Fondling of Apple's slab declines"

Surely Fondling of Apple's slap increases, just not by as much as usual.

Let's be honest here now, all the slabs to a greater or lesser extent do pretty much the same thing.

Some look better, some perform better but most have no problems streaming of surfing the web.

Most have a reasonable number of apps, most are quick enough for the average user. Some are slightly slicker but does that reall matter?

I wouldn't call it a drop or a slow down, just a levelling off of the playing field.

"A sub-$100 tablet simply isn't sustainable — Apple knows this — and it's likely the reason it isn't concerned with market share erosion," he added.

Alternate reading of the 'evidence': sub-$100 tablets and other Android based tablets will continue to sell in markets where the iPad remains unaffordable. Apple are concerned that their sales aren't increasing as much the market increases but are still making a lot of money and aren't going to admit to any problems with their sanctified device.

The market is splitting into budget and luxury. I can't see BMW & Mercedes worrying too much about the rise of Dacia.

That said, my Mercedes rattles so much, wish I'd bought a Dacia.

        Re: Or

BMW and Mercedes not so much perhaps, but companies like Dacia will eat into the residual values of more expensive cars as people who could only previously afford second hand buy new.

Apple maintains its high prices partly because of residuals - a lot of people selling phones at the end of their contract (part of the reason for putting them in cases). If you can buy a new fairly high end Chinese phone cheaper than a 2 year old iPhone, this will eventually hit sales and margins. This is why companies like Oppo and Xiaomi are a threat outside their traditional markets.

Ah the good old German quality myth. Any signs of rotten sills yet?

I've never seen the sense in flooding the market with product that ultimately doesn't turn the manufacturer a profit, especially since the only benefactor from a large user base is Google themselves, all the hardware manufacture has is the headache of support and warranty issues.

There's something very wrong in giving away a free tablet with a smartphone on contract or (as I note with Currys right now) a £20 discount on a £100 tablet, which after the discount, VAT, the retailers margin and import duty have all been knocked off must enter the UK for all of about 40 quid.

        Barmy.

    iPhad and iPhone eventually Niche?

A tablet that costs far more than an x86 laptop and has over 40% margin (less margin on iPhones, Apple average is greedy 38%)?

That's not sustainable as a mass market product.

    IDC Proove they are useless

However, Apple still owns the lion's share of the market, with iPads comprising nearly one in three tablets sold, said IDC.

Shipments sank by 12.8 per cent to 12.3m in the third quarter of 2014, compared with the same period last year. Meanwhile, the global tablet market grew by 11.5 per cent to 53.8m.

According to my maths thats slightly less than 23%. since when was that 1 in 3, its not even a full 1 in 4....

Nice to know Jobs' reality distortion field has managed to persevere without him.

It's a reality distortion field. The name itself is the clue.

What's more, it has expanded to fill the entire continental United States. If you don't believe me, look at the voting forecasts in the midterms.

    Careful wording.

"However, Apple still owns the lion's share of the market, with iPads comprising nearly one in three tablets sold, said IDC."

This is saying, "Apple is still the largest single manufacturer of tablets". This is very different to tablet marketshare by OS. Android is by far king of the tablets, it's just spread across lots of manufacturers and brands, looking at IDC's data, ipads only account for 21% of the market. Therefore Android tablets have a whopping 79%

    Umm

Would this not have been getting close to the release date of the latest ipad? With fingerprint authorisation, performance boost and relative price drop? So who would spend on the soon to be released version for the sake of a few weeks? Particularly when iPads are boasted to last for years satisfactorily and one need not buy a replacement just to get an easy OS update.

    Zombie Purchasing

People are hyped to such a degree, that they go an buy the iPad and find that it is really a boring piece of equipment, that is really designed to keep sending you to the iStore and the iCloud so Apple can create a meta dossier on you . A smaller phone can do as much as all anyone really needs to do and it is way more portable and convenient.

      Re: Zombie Purchasing

You started well. But then lost me. Any sort of web browsing more than a minute or too is painful on a phone screen. Battery life poor doing data tasks on Phone. A tablet isn't an alternative to a phone but an alternative to netbook/notebook. If you don't need specialist x86 apps then for many people a Tablet can replace a laptop, with option of real BT or USB keyboard too. As I don't go anywhere and have a dedicated home office and my Laptop is on 8am to 11pm approx, have large screen Android phone and a Kindle DX, I don't particularly need a Tablet. But for most non-engineering and ordinary consumers a tablet is a far better idea than Laptop/PC. No way does a phone replace a tablet. If I had the money to spare I'd get a Tablet too and likely use it more than my phone.

Yes, my iPad has exactly the same functionality as my iPod Touch, except that it has a bigger screen. So why am I typing this response on my iPad? It is because it has a bigger screen. I am at home so portability isn't such an issue, and the bigger screen is easier on my eyes.
