back to article 'Google is NOT the gatekeeper to the web, as some claim'

This was the week when the depths of the internet proved even darker and more twisty than usual when Emma Watson, actor and UN ambassador, gave a speech at the United Nations about feminism. The well-received oration pointed out that men also suffered from the restraints of gendered societal pressures and that feminism was …

"This is a false flag by /whichever agency/, probably NSA or something."

    Paranoia much?

Meanwhile, in the real world, the likes of the NSA have real work to do, which doesn't include mounting elaborate operations to discredit those whose threat level is somewhere around fuck all on their scale.

Re: "This is a false flag by /whichever agency/, probably NSA or something."

Yes, why bother, the main threats they need to focus on are whistlebowers, civil and digial right groups and such. 4chan can be a convenient scapegoat but the time doesn't seem to be right for that now.

Paranoia, but potentially justified paranoia. Anonymous have made a lot of enemies - some of them very powerful people, as when they targeted banking infrastructure in protest of the financial blockade of Wikileaks. It's quite plausible some of those many enemies may have decided it desireable to close 4chan, the primary home and recruiting ground of Anonymous, and hired a PR agency to find a way to inspire public opinion against them.

    Interesting data on Bendgate

The bendgate complaints came from people who sat on phones in their hip pocket. Such a phone was probably quite warm, especially if the sitter was on the large side. Have the testers considered whether prolonged warming of the phone, with resultant softening of the glue holding display/battery/etc in place might make them more bendy? Rather like a bar of chocolate, the break/bend point will be very different if the bar has been sat on in your pocket for an hour.

        Uri Geller bends it too

Nice piss take, even though it's fairly transparent what they do. Some fun on a Saturday :)

Those damn people who oppose climate change!!

"Everyone understands climate change is occurring and the people who oppose it are really hurting our children and grandchildren and making the world a much worse place."

Grammar police here. People who oppose "it", sentence structure implies it = climate change. Thus, the entire sentence is screwy and doesn't say what the writer presumably intended.

Re: Those damn people who oppose climate change!!

The actual root cause of slow progress on solutions is that the environmentalists tend to be idealists with zero management skills and they haven't even come up with a pragmatic, sorted by cost-benefit, efficient, achievable priority list.

Where's the list? Who is working on it? Coal had better be near the top. Chinese have a plan to switch to Siberan gas. That's progress. About -1% in one action.

E.g. Humans achieved orbit through effective action. They didn't waste decades debating with The Flat Earth Society. They made a workable plan and executed it.

Environmentalists need to refocus on making a plan.

Mark Fiore's take on climate talks

Mark Fiore makes a fairly astute observation re. climate change. Enjoy.

    iT just works (tm)

Ahh - so that's how "iT just works" err works. Cyanogenmod nightly builds are more stable than iOS releases at the moment.

"clear indication that the internet NEEDS to be censored"

No, just clear indication this "Rantic" bunch need to be purged. I would love the irony if 4chan ended up owning them in court for pulling this mad false-flag stunt...

    1. Suricou Raven

Rantic seems to barely exist as a corporate entity, though. This is itsself suspicious: It may well be a front to provide some protection, either legally or in anticipation that antagonising 4chan is likely to result in DDosing.

Freedom of speech is NOT about beer

Regarding the first part, pretty much insane on its face. If they do nuke 4chan, they'll just release such pictures elsewhere. I don't believe their surface argument at all. I think it is mostly about intimidation of publication, and this is just a good wedge issue. Once they establish that your website or newspaper or any other business can be nuked for one reason, it really does become a slippery slope of trying to justify additional reasons. The real point is to create a climate of fear that results in self-censorship, the only effective kind.

Regarding the headline, I feel it was bait and switch. Not much about the google here, but having been poked, I'll say that I'm convinced the google has gone evil and that their current motto is "All of your attentions are is belonging to the google!"

The amazing thing about Emma Watson is that she is systematically beautiful: whatever she's wearing, whatever the hairstyle, and whenever the paparazzi snap her, she's drop-dead gorgeous.

She just doesn't seem to do bad hair days.

Either that or she's got an amazing PR team.

google is a gate keeper, but so is yahoo, and bing. anything the oligarchs of america dont want you to see, or hear will be omited straight away. at the same time, you will be bombarded with things they do want you to hear, such as how evil China is, and how great capitalism is
