back to article Texas T Rex Dell: Terabytes shipped. Count 'em and weep...

Dell sold more storage capacity than any other supplier in the first half of 2014, says analyst IDC. In IDC's worldwide Quarterly Disk Storage Systems Tracker reports Dell is singled out as having sold 4,311,728 terabytes of disk storage, 4.3 exabytes, by the mid-point of 2014 – pretty damned impressive. We're told that Dell …

If dell ups the price then its sales will go down.

    The following seems silly:

"It's apparent, though, that to get a greater share of total disk storage revenues Dell will have to sell a great deal more storage and/or raise its prices."

If Dell holds its current pricing scheme it can take advantage of increased market share, more sales opportunities, services and etc.

Great advantage with the current pricing is that people seem to like it. Everyone any their dog wants to buy the best value they can, if Dell are offering this at cost to profits then the low margin may help over the mid to long term.

As a past customer, I've seen Dell take a big dump on their competitors pricing on many occasions and win business as a result. They won a lot of mine for offering the features I want at lower prices (with good local partners which helps a lot).

My only concern is that with reduced margins comes reduced R&D spending. Although as a private company, they can dictate their margins with no regard for Wall Street. We'll see how the strategy plays out over the course of the year.

    4.3 exabytes

That's a metric fuckton (fapton?) of porn.

"equates to more than 57,000 years of continuously running high definition video"

Yes but its all weird indie modern art museum film stuff of time lapse flowers opening juxtaposed with public domain morris dancing footage shown backwards, then someone is naked for no good reason and then it cuts to a pacific nuclear test.

    Thats alot of servers!

Who's willing to bet that a large portion of that 4.3 exabytes ends up as storage for all the IP Video Cameras bought since Sandy Hook and the Boston Marathon?

On the other hand (no puns intended) how else would you store all that free porn?

Do they (also) count the HDD/SSD in every laptop & desktop?

    Title says it all

      Don't forget those servers too...

But that's exactly what I was thinking .. with < 10 % market share in external disk storage market, there is a no way they can reach that number...

the profit topdog is the one

that is going to loose market share fast. Dell is simply trying to commoditize storage.

    Period.

Having high margins like EMC simply means EMC is ripping it's customers.

but then again, that is not really a new fact, is it ?
