back to article Comcast: Help, help, FCC. Netflix and pals are EXTORTIONISTS

Comcast has branded Netflix, Discovery and others extortionists after they opposed the ISP's proposed merger with Time Warner Cable In a dossier to US watchdog the FCC [PDF], Comcast claimed companies lobbying against its merger are hoping to force it into making concessions that benefit them. Specifically, Comcast alleges …

The only way Comcast and TWC should be allowed to merge is if they end up like BT, where the network department is detached from the retail services and other ISPs are allowed access to the network at the same rates as the retail arm.

They're overpriced and slow, and are attempting to extract as much as they can from subscribers because of their effective monopoly position. Making one bigger entity is not going to improve that.

Gives new meaning to the word 'hypocrisy'.

The significance of this extortion lies in not just the sheer audacity of some of the demands

Wait, are they talking about their own extortion of transit fees from Netflix?

    Comcast is upset because ...

... Discovery channel is asking for higher fees to carry its channels?

    O-well, then. Payback's a bitch.

    What Comcast is really saying

    Help help! I'm being repressed!

So, Comcast demands content providers pay a fee to carry their feeds (over connections their customers have already paid big money for), then accuses the content providers of extortion? We have a word for that. I won't tell you what it is, but it starts with an H and ends in -ypocrit.

    Oh, for Glob's sake...

Just axe this ridiculous deal and get it over with. Tell them, in big bold letters, "MERGER: NOT YOURS!", then kick them both in the yarbles by making broadband a utility.

Please, FCC, this time, side with the consumers and not the bloated corporations.

"[E]ach of the entities making the 'ask' has all but conceded that if its individual business interests are met, then it has no concern whatsoever about the state of the industry, supposed market power going forward, or harm to consumers, competitors, or new entrants..."

As opposed to Comcast, who feel exactly the same way, just without admitting it in public, so that they can play the victim.

Their gall lies somewhere between amusing and appalling.

Comcraps and Crime Warmer should BOTH be broken up

This proposed merger between Comcast and Time Warner is completely wrong and should be denied by the FCC. They should have to stay separate and be made to cover the same areas as each other. THEN you might get some competition between the two. Verizon Fios is not even a player rurally nor is AT&T.

Wireless "broadband" is even less than useless, it's practically non-existent.

This is an untenable state of affairs in this country.

Where is Google when you need them?
