back to article Telstra tells Big Content it won't become unpaid Copyright Cop

Australia's dominant telco and internet service provider Telstra has waded into the nation's copyright enforcement debate by rejecting Big Content's calls for it to assume liability for its users' copyright infringements. Thodey's missive on the matter offers the usual “TV shows cost a lot to make and stealing them is wrong” …

    There Are Other Aussie ISPs?

    sarcasm

I was starting to think iiNet was the only ISP in Australia. But WOW! There's another one called Telstra! Well I'll be!

    /sarcasm

It is so good to hear _another_ ISP other than iiNet mouthing about being the Internet's police.

I'm not a fan, a customer, nor an investor, but good on 'em!

    Yes, but no

Remember, Telstra won't do anything unless handsomely paid.

      Re: Yes, but no

And if handsomely paid, Telstra would sell out their customers in a heatbeat......

      Re: Yes, but no

Er, sorry, Correction: Helstra will do anything is handsomely paid. Including sell customer metadata, without consent- as it was proven to have done via its 3G network for about a year in 2012, before denying it until it was publicly proven. Forced to apologise, their CEO said it was terrible and he'd not let it happen again.

The same CEO and management have learned and moved on- to actively spruik for new takers like Big Content's lawyers.

    given this governments proclivities

what is the betting that any solution will require

    (a) lots of record keeping and virtual red tape, needing to be "archived"

    (b) at users expense

    (c) charged to internet users and of course will require a special new quango filled with technically illiterate lawyers

    (d) also funded out of a user pays levy of some kind

    (e) which is also the standard excuse for slower network speeds to ensure everyone is on "Team Orstralia"

    (f) unless one is subscribing to that waste of bytes, Foxtroll.

      Re: given this governments proclivities

But remember, the KRudd government would have done all of the above and also created a gigantic new corporation (Big Brother Inc?) as a public/private partnership* to do the snooping.

      * ie costing far more than it would have if the government just went out and did the thing itself

Only a few days ago, Telstra agreed with Optus that any pirates should be hanged, drawn and quartered, then sent to jaol after being relieved of all their bank account contents, and all their lively stuff (copyright theft is a crime now doncha know).

As long as a portion of the moula lines Telstra's pockets of course.

First iiNet and now Telstra are bang on target with their thoughts on piracy. We have already seen the level of incompetance of George Brandis on the subject of metadata and now he has been sucked in by content providers. The content providers make billions from their products and for some reason think anyone but them should pay to stop piracy of their product. In their world the end result is they will make even more billions whilst ISPs will face enormous costs which will be passed onto consumers. So they expect massive policing to be provided for them free of charge whilst at the same time actually limiting access to their products as much as they can.

When is someone going to explain to these people that they are actually the cause of piracy and it follows on that they are also the solution???

At The End Of The Day

ISP are just a service provider. Stupid draconian laws just means people will hide their actions better via a VPN or the TOR network and then the ISP will have no idea what people are doing.

End result is hidemyass.com makes more money and life goes on like before.

These laws are a total waste of time and money.
