    He's a teenager.

Take away his Spotify, Skype and Vine access and he'll be climbing the walls before lunchtime!

He will be activating botnets before lunchtime.

(Or launch nuclear missiles by whistling DTMF codes over the phone-cal--to-his-lawyer like Kevin Mitnick did.)

    Meh

    or just....

They could just hold him whilst gathering evidence and well ....

Then he is 18 problem solved :/

    Ringleader or skiddie pawn?

I suspect the little oik was simply hired to do the deed by one of the bigger spamming gangs. Hopefully they got enough evidence (or he will give them enough) to go after the real spam gangs.

    Vulnerable individual?

    What a stupid PC phrase.

      Yup...

      Little shit seems more appropriate.

Vulnerable individual is a generic term to mean not just an under-18, but someone (possibly over 18) with learning difficulties.

No. It is a phrase used to mean an individual who is vulnerable.

        Simple.

Can't understand how you got two down votes for your eminently sensible answer. Have an up vote from me.

"....his pick of jobs for life." Not with a conviction for money laundering he won't. Indeed, his choices in IT will probably be limited to fixing PCs in a community college at best.

Don't think that's what he meant.

Rather more like the choice between making licence plates, doing the laundry, or being Bubba's bitch.

".... There is no money here, STOPhaus are 100% volunteer efforts....." The implication is the systems and other evidence the Police seized include enough proof of other criminal activities, including money laundering, to charge him with that crime as well.

".....Ignorant people shouldn't vote or comment." Petard moment?

        Pick of jobs

Robert Morris didn't do too badly. But computer crims didn't have to waste 10 years of their life awaiting threatened extradition then. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morris_worm

"Robert Morris....." Yeah, and which bit of Morris's conviction included money laundering?

    Suitable punishment for him

2 years of internet access through a 300 baud modem

That will teach the little git what it feels like to be on the other end of a ddos

Or even 56K modem with a rather dodgy phone line, then he'd have to listen to the annoying "boing boing" and cross fingers that it actually connected this time before mysteriously dropping after 20 mins...! :)

(I know only one of the 56K systems did the noises, but just make sure it's that one).

The stupid kid has wrecked his future. A criminal record for dishonesty isn't the sort of thing that's going to get him employed or even funded for his own legit business, should that be his chosen path.

Helping a bunch of crooks to organise DDoS attacks isn't even in the big league. It's just the 21st C equivalent of a two bit petty criminal.

To me it's sort of like Val Resnick in the film Ransom. Occasionally hangs out and interacts with the big boys, thinks he's one of them but is actually just a squirmy little worm with an over-inflated self-worth.

          Re: Suitable punishment for him

You use the term "crooks" as liberally as Spamhaus does. Please support your allegations that the attackers were "crooks" without using the DDoS as the offense.

"..... Please support your allegations that the attackers were "crooks" without using the DDoS as the offense." Maybe the fact the coppers found enough evidence to also charge him with money laundering? Not at all sorry if this was one of your skiddie buddies, he shouldn't have played with fire, I just suggest you learn from his lesson.

Did the thought ever occur to you that the target of the attack was DoSing him first?
