back to article Torvalds slams Sun over Linux intentions

You can almost hear the ebb of conversation on everything from Linux drivers to closing the information gap over the crackle of a roaring log fire and playful popping of wine corks. Sun's chief executive Jonathan Schwartz has invited Linux creator Linus Torvalds to an evening of home-cooked dinner and fine conversation at his …

    Do it like Debian

"...Schwartz called for a truce in hostilities. "Are we after your drivers? No more than you're after ZFS or Crossbow or Dtrace - it's not predation, it's prudence. Let's stop wasting time recreating wheels we both need to roll forward,"..."

That's fine Mr. Schwartz, then let's have Solaris a la Debian. That is a controlled development too but it is popular not through some proprietary user lock-in, but a damn good assembly of free/open source software. If you've got a good product, people will use it - period.

    "Queue the plug..."

Is "Queue the plug" American for "Cue the plug" or is it referring to the sector allocation queue stack in the kernel?

    symbiosis work

"Schwartz was right back on the charm offensive. The day after Torvalds' posting, Schwartz denied the Linux community had hurt Sun - although Torvalds' implication is he's referring to the server sales."

Hmmm, working for a major semi-conductor company (top 10), I can vehemently deny that claim. Linux _has_ caused them great harm here and elsewhere. OS/HW lock-in was bashed to pieces the day good Opteron servers with Linux came out. All CAD SW + the lots (thousands) of CAD workstations were shifted to consolidated Opteron compute farms, and the whole SUN business was brought down to its knees. Sorry, Schwartz, plain lies here, as far as CAD is concerned.

"Going on the offensive, Schwartz called for a truce in hostilities. "Are we after your drivers? No more than you're after ZFS or Crossbow or Dtrace - it's not predation, it's prudence. Let's stop wasting time recreating wheels we both need to roll forward," Schwartz blogged."

Sure, makes sense. Drivers ? I'm all for bashing Linux about drivers. 2.0 drivers ? or 2.2, 2.4 maybe or 2.6 versions ? Some with the exact same code but with an each time changing API (Adaptec 3C905 anyone ?). As Linus pointed out, it's not about drivers themselves, but people who develop/maintain them, that is the big thing: attract the workforce. I suspect this workforce is tempted, due to some recent problems in the Linux developpment schema (version control, changing API as well).

At the end, I believe we have 2 camps, and each need to work with the other, as a symbiosis. Linux alone _will_ die with chaotic API, while OpenSolaris alone _will_ die with lack of drivers. Both need to collaborate in order to get the best of both.

I really hope the leaders of each camp understand that.

2 Egos = 1 Alter Ego, IDyllic Superego ........ and a Virtually NeuReal Clone of [2] Human Beings?

"Is "Queue the plug" American for "Cue the plug" or is it referring to the sector allocation queue stack in the kernel?"

Surely the IDer would have their Combination of Open Sourced Systems and Drivers Mirror and Mentor the Kernel with a Virtual Application of their stacks.... Pretexting the Computed, Most Likely, Likeable Results.

Addendum to Freud, who notes .... "Note that the Ego and Superego play roles in each of the three levels of consciousness, but the Id is entirely played out in the Unconscious .... http://www.wilderdom.com/personality/L8-4StructureMindIdEgoSuperego.html .... but the ID plays out entirely in the Imagination for that is the Store of Knowledge in the Age of Newly Born Innocence.

How quickly does what they learn, from all that they experience, blunt the Imagination with Yesterdays Old Hat News for Today's Screened Habits......Placid, Placated Drones but Live AID for the Hive. That makes the Hive Core dependent upon Drones being implacable...... which, of course, they are not ....any more.
