vSAN
Not sure why there's a need to crowbar vSAN into this solution, it would almost certainly have been cheaper to use a low end physical SAN with no perceivable performance hit or loss of resilience. unless I've missed something big?
When we said that storage nirvana would be the ability to have VSAN virtualised storage containers and physical SAN array resources managed by the same policy-driven software abstraction layer, we little imagined a software supplier would pop up and say: “We can do that.” That's just about what El Reg storage desk wrote in …
The cost of the VSAN + Atlantis Computing software makes the ‘real’ total acquisition cost much higher than the Cost of HARDWARE / # users. Wouldn’t it make sense to add the software to the hardware and then do the math for the real world cost of this persistent desktop? VSAN and ILIO didn’t consume any of the user density per server? Interesting. Even at $366/user for just the hardware, that’s still very expensive. Plus whatever you add for the software cost/user… The achievable target should be less than $100/persistent user (all in).
