back to article Department of Human Services removes Medicare from internet

Australia's Department of Human Services (DoHS) is working to re-instate redirects from some of its legacy websites. The DoHS is the umbrella agency for delivery of the Australian government's health insurance, income support and child support services. The Department's site offers access to all of those services, but many …

    Aaaaaaaargh!

Don't worry, Simon ... even if they restore the redirect, it still won't be useable!

Because you can now only log in to Medicare using your MyGov ID (which is a completely-impossible-to-remember-random-sequence), then link this to your Medicare account. Unfortunately, having just tried this, the Medicare site won't accept your password as valid; and using the link to reset your password won't work either, because the email with the password will be sent off into the ether somewhere (it's neither in the inbox nor the spam filter).

Yes, somewhere I've got an email with the my MyGov ID. Once you login it asks you numerous verification questions , asks you to tick multiple boxes and THEN gives you the opportunity to go to the medicare site. Most people have given up by then. The medicare site asks some of the same verification questions and has a few more tick boxes.

Once you get in most of the data is wrong and/or incomplete.

    Not to worry

The current LNP Government is trying its best to kill off Medicare altogether.

Apparently poor people are using it.

This is not an isolated example, but part of a pattern of incompetence in transitioning Federal government sites for years. Some have had multiple name changes in recent years, with a failure to update not only links between them, but also email addresses, and documents referencing all of them.

No one competent to complain to.

Im sure the recent health services budget cuts after the election have not helped. Perhaps the desk thats meant to have someone sitting in it looking after this kind of stuff is now empty?

"Health services budget cuts after the election" probably don't have anything to do with it, because health is looked after by the Department Of Health, which is a separate department from the one this article is about.

This is nothing to do with colour of government (Lib or Lab) or funding cuts. It is simple basic incompetence within bureaucracy. It's also not new for the computer age. These idiots have been doing the same thing with paper files for aeons.
