back to article Could Joe Tucci's parting shot at EMC be to SELL OFF VMware?

A sharp-eyed industry analyst has spotted that cloudy virtualisation biz VMware's SEC filings mention the words “spin-off”. What's going on here? Aaron Rakers, the MD of analyst house Stifel Nicolaus, picked up the following sentence in VMware’s November 2013 SEC Form 10-Q filing: …that for as long as EMC or its successor-in- …

    WTF?

    VMWare is part of Pivotal.

If anything they would spin off all of Pivotal which would be Greenplum, VMware and their Big Data stuff.

It doesn't make sense to pull VMware out of their "Green" Stack. (IBM is known as "Blue Stack" hence the "Green Stack for EMC)

      Re: WTF?

If they do sell them off it would likely be perfect timing. VMWare are in possibly terminal decline with the completely free and roughly equivalent capabilities of Hyper-V eating significantly into their market share.

VMWare have taken the 'Oracle' approach and kept sales up by sweating their locked in customers for as long as they can with ever increasing license and support costs, but that path can only last so long....

        Re: WTF?

Not even close outside a vast majority of businesses are still running VMWare. It's market-share continues to grow and that is what makes people pissed off. How did such a hot property get in the hands of EMC? Everyone would love for EMC to sell its super controlling interest in this company. Not going to happen Cloud and virtualization are the big buzzwords right now as well as big data and EMC has a dominate position in the market. If anything I see them expanding more into big data and Apache Hadoop cloud services maybe acquiring a Hadoop company. Maybe going after someone who competes with Cloudera developing their own offshoot. Ether way I predict when Tucci steps down he will retain his position a chairman of the board of VMWare and EMC for some time to come. VMware is not going anywhere anytime soon its too key to EMC business.

VMware is not part of Pivotal. VMware is a public company majority owned by EMC. Pivotal is a private company with ownership being ~65% EMC, ~25% VMware, and ~10% GE.

    RSA

I'd expect EMC to sell RSA first.

Before its value drops to zero.

      Re: RSA

Maybe someone (Oracle?) buys VMware and RSA gets thrown in free? :)

      Re: RSA

RSA's significance compared to EMC's gross revenue is next to nothing.
