back to article So, which people you read about in The Register got gongs in the Honours list?

It's New Year's again, which means that another Honours list has been issued by the British government, designating those who will henceforth go through life with some more letters after their name and a new gong dangling from their formal eveningwear. Many of these people are of only marginal if any interest to Reg readers, …

    You missed one...

A Professor of Computer Science at Manchester University surely counts (even if their research interest is bio-informatics... :p )

    Ecademy

I thought the time when something was made new and relevant and hip (showing my age, there?!) by sticking an "E" in front of it had long gone.

But maybe (Ms) Penny Power is not a considerably-cheaper version of Poundland, but an associate of Paddy Power?

Yeah, you have to put an 'i' in front of things to make the relevant and hip nowadays.

"There's an OBE for Joanna Shields, head of the "Tech City" government push to create a white-hot technology business zone in East London, which has seen hundreds of "digital businesses" spring up in the area (many, sad to say, with a distinctly Nathan Barley air about them - or no particular tech aspects at all other than having a website)."

Don't forget that OBE stands for "other buggers' efforts" .....

No gong for Mr Raspberry Pi?

If the Raspberry Pi Foundation was located in the Silicon Roundabout, he'd be Sir Eben by now, or even joined Lord Sugar and Baroness Lane-Fox in the Lords.

    You missed a corker

"Christopher John Mairs, for services to Engineering". Which really means advanced computer engineering. Go look him up: ex-IBM, then involved with a UK software company for years. All very dull and worthy you might think. But he's also an ace water-skier. And blind.

    Joke entries...

Following the links to the lists, I see some joke entries made it through - how else to explain "Clive Kenneth STEPHENS ... HM Revenue and Customs. For services to Tax Compliance for Large Businesses."

Perhaps he'll be celebrating with a Starbucks' coffee whilst phoning round all his friends on a Vodafone mobile?

Do film special effects count as IT these days?

Chris Corbould gets an OBE for services to the film industry as a special effects supervisor.

    The BBC's priorities

Not to be too obvious, but ISTM that Mr East is of greater import to the world at large (just look where ARM processors have got to, and how many lives they're touching), while Mr Smith's achievements are much more widely known and understandable to the public.

Thus, the honors compiler got it right, and the press did their usual job.

(Hint: the beer's not for the BBC.)
