    Rented building anyway

I thought that Nokia flogged this building a couple of years ago and are renting it back. I assume this just means Microsoft will pay the lease now rather than Nokia losing a bricks and mortar asset.

Aye, I recall reading they were changing the tenantship status to reduce costs fairly recently. Every new mote that comes out about this deal puts Nokia's long-term thinking in a better, saner light.

Sad to have to mourn the passing of an iconic brand - but it doesn't look like there's as grand a future in phone hardware production as there is in the software and infrastructure that keeps the wee bastards ticking along...

No it lays bare the absolute destruction of Nokia over the previous years and shows how the quick turn and burn strategy has finally finished them off.

They have pushed out some decent handsets recently, but being hobbled with WP8 has meant sales are in the toilet compared to what they could/should have been.

yeah they did sell it, all part of the reason they are glad to be shot of the whole enterprise. Sad really, but tge hope of a return to handsets and hardware remains alive with Jolla...

Near the place Linux was born

    - or at least named. The Nokia^H^H^H^H^H Microsoft house is just a few kilometers from the Helsinki University of Technology, whose FTP server was used to distribute the first Linux kernel versions back in 1991. The administrator thought "Freax" wasn't a good name for the project, and renamed the directory "Linux".
