back to article FlexPod upsets VCE in converged storage block-building test - analysts

There are reasons why Cisco's top bod John Chambers gets all the pay he does. One of them is that he has the two top stand-alone storage companies fighting each other to sell more of his UCS servers. The companies sell Cisco gear by offering converged storage/server/networking systems. Vblock concocts the products in EMC (VCE …

Screw 'em both. Get Nutanix or Simplivity.

    We are currently...

...doing diligence around converged infrastructure, lots of interesting things going on in this space. Based on our requirements, the Dell Active System is slightly edging out the vBlock 340, all the way up until we talk data protection where the vBlock builds on EMCs pile o' products. HP is sitting near the top as well. IBM is a fair ways behind, unless you are talking about price, but we haven't really sized up a FlexPod yet.

Lots of free lunches though, it's f@cking great.

Sounds to me, you're in greater need of a lunch than a solution

and Flexpod marketshare is only going to increase, what hurt VCE at least from my own personal experience in deploying the vBlock stack was the UIM software. We actually had to remove UIM from the stack because it was misbehaving so much. I went to zone in a LUN through UIM and it only zoned in one side of the fabric. There is also a lack of SVD's (solution validated designs) on behalf of VCE, the vendor relationships in Flexpod have created numerous SVD's for all types of deployments. Proven methodology really can sell and if implemented correctly it really can lower TCO, provide ROI and scale to meet future demands.

    FlexPod beating VCE needs clarification

Real easy to understand. This data is from the mid market space and VCE plays well in both mid-market and in higher end commercial and enterprise environments. So these numbers are for the smaller companies and does not factor in the VCE dominance in the more demanding and application intensive companies. What's not being said is that EMC VSPEX actually beat FlexPod in this same space. So the data on this is a bit off actually. FlexPod is only reference architecture like VSPEX, VCE is not reference architecture at all. It should be considered as hyper-converged infrastructure, they do firmware upgrades automatically every 6 months, and its all tested etc.. FlexPod is really just UCS and storage where the storage admin still needs to know how to manage it all. VCE is one GUI where you now don't have to a storage admin at the wheel but a VMW admin instead. Thus proiding a hyper converged resource for the company.
