    The opposite will happen

    The cloud is an opportunity to keep the competition from reverse engineering your software. When the competition can dissect your product, commoditization soon follows.

    The automotive equivalent to the could would be if engineers at Ford could no longer purchase an M3, but could only be driven around in one by BMW employees.

      If you think you need "to keep the competition from reverse engineering your software", you're already out-of-date. What it does isn't secret, and how it does it isn't important.

    The proprietary cloud companies are just trying to get the usual lock-in. Once we get all your data in our cloud, it will be too hard to switch. We've seen this act several times over the past 25 years, and it works for awhile, despite all the resentment.

    At last... agreement

    Today: "IBM: Closed clouds are dead meat"

    Yesterday: "Gartner complains no public cloud is good enough for business"

    Combine those two opinions, and you get my long-standing verdict about "cloud technology" in general. It's nice that the pundits have finally caught up...

    Decryption As A Service

    You bring it into the Cloud and decrypt it there. So that they can nicely read everything whenever they need it.

    What else would you expect IBM to say ?

    What else would you expect a company with declining HW sales, no SW strategy and tons of Prof Services to say ?

    Open source projects in Enterprises succeed only when the Enterprise "owns" it, not when some monster outside consultancy is paid by the hour to make it work.

    All "Brand Name" HW providers are toast. The server space is almost fully commoditized. Advances in virtualization will bring all (yes crazy large) applications to x86. All non x86 are dead men walking. Next to fall are the big network manufactures that spend zillions on ASIC dev, and have a 3 year dev-production timeframe. All those functions can be done in SW on x86.

    So what are you left with ?

    Robust Proprietary SW on x86 that runs every OS well. Who could that be ?

    PS: Let's all give thanks to AMD for creating x86_64, else itanium would have changed all this, not for the better.
