So
Project "Nile" is going to have the same economics as off the shelf servers and Openstack Swift? rollocks
EMC has introduced a vast array of new gear in Milan at its “Mega Launch” under the slogan SpeedToLead. The newest kit is targeted at private, public and hybrid clouds. What do we have so far? For private clouds, EMC previewed Project Nile, an Elastic Cloud Storage platform said to have public cloud "scale, economics and ease …
It will have EMC-conomics - these involve EMC sales guys confusing high level CxO level types into spending enough money, based on alleged savings, so their commissions can buy them those hand made shoes, send the kids to private school and fund that footballers wives-style house in the Home Counties.
The EMC Benchmark certainly does look impressive - but what's even more impressive is the configuration they had to use to drive the performance...
544 SSD drives (75TB usable) and 5 15K Spindles (100GB usable for VNX OS Vault...).
Which leads me to believe... if the VNX2 is NOT spindle bound and is now Multi-Core CPU bound... why were 544 Enterprise Flash Drives needed to drive that performance & capacity rather than a mix of disk and SSD as a "hybrid" solution they're punting?

"The EMC Benchmark certainly does look impressive...." Nah, the boyos from one of the Nimble resellers are currently my fave benchers. They seriously confused a business manager by telling him that an array not being all flash was so last year, etc., and provided an all flash array benchmarks for a project that required iSCSI delivery to remote offices.....
What happen to fancied bird Thunder and Bourne? VIPR and NILE! Good luck.
EMC today is a private startup incubator house like Y-Combinator who will buy good startups and try to grow and harvest them. That's pretty much about it. No innovation in reality. Great strategy though.
Datadomain, Isilon and VMware are examples to that.
Sure EMC will pick one among Zerto, Pernix, Nutanix and say it is the greatest thing again.
VNX2 is good for Clariion houses who get something better than before. However there are plenty of better technology outside like Nutanix, Nimble, Tintri and Tegile. NetApp still far ahead of this new bezel Clariion. Also found that VDM is only migration tool for NAS data, over data. 99% of VNX SAN users needs FORKLIFT.
