    Market forces at work

The Cloud has absolved itself of all responsibility, so market forces are stepping in to provide some measure of guarantee.

I dare say the abject failure of Azure was probably a wake-up call for those new companies. I just hope for their sake that they managed a proper risk evaluation, or else they are going down.

In any case, I can't help but feel that this is the true nature of the Cloud - pay to access your data, and pay again to recover it in case of trouble.

I wonder how many more paying steps will become involved in all this nebulous business before bean counters finally wake up and smell the coffee ?

      Re: Market forces at work

It is simply the progression of expenditures. Any new trend or technology that comes along and frees up money will attract add on products/services that suck those dollars right back up, generally for something you had before but the new thing fails to provide. You can shift money around and do fancy tricks with the books but at the end of the day there are only so many ways to accomplish the goals of your particular business. There really aren't a lot of ways to actually save money and still meet operational goals if your business is already profiting at satisfactory margins.

    Cloud to Server Backup

I'm suspicious of these cloud-to-cloud solutions. If something goes wrong with the network, you're out. There can also be juristictional problems if you ever need the data back.

We use the Syncdocs http://syncdocs.com app to backup our Google Apps customers to their own desktops or servers.

As for the market forces, cloud vendors are going to charge you just enough to make you move. Market forces mean they'd be bad businesspeople to charge a huge amount less.

    WTF?

"Backupify"... it may be just me, but that's a really painful name! Who comes up with these things?

      "Backupify"

I first read that as "backup-iffy". Hardly a confidence inspiring name.
