back to article Apple said to dump Samsung as chip-baking partner – again

A report coursing about the interwebs claims that Apple is dumping its iDevice chip partnership with über-rival Samsung, and has inked a three-year deal with Taiwanese wafer-baker TSMC and its "IC design service partner" Global UniChip to manufacture A8, A9, and A9X chips at the 20nm, 16nm, and 10nm process nodes. all Samsungs fault ....

.........that we have to reuse the old chipset, keep the low DPI screen and make loads of mega bucks from the cheapest made high end phone on the market.

Naught boy Samsung, stop giving us a crap iPhone.

      Meh

      These

These stories appear about a month or two before Apple announce a new product or update to a product.

It's only done to get publicity.....

Or maybe all these rumours are Apple's way of negotiating a cheaper deal with Samsung?

Witness the rumor mill and how inaccurate it has been in the past. When Samsung has a contract to produce chips for Apple then Samsung has months of advance notice for marketing to respond with competing product.

It is good for Apple to severe ties with Samsung. Samsung will have to start thinking for themselves rather than have Apple show them the way.

    Samsung magic sauce

Years ago the Samsung 6400 was the magic sauce. 3 chips (ARM SoC, Flash & RAM) layered in one approx 2mm package. Less PCB tracks and less PCB area.

I guess by now someone else can put the Apple variant Arm SoC in that package?

It's not impossible TSMC make the chip and Samsung STILL assemble it with the other two in the package. BTW the original iPhone used the 6400

They might be dumping Samsung for the processors but yet they are making Samsung their SSD vendor. So, they taketh but also giveth in terms of business.

    1. David Kelly 2

SSD's are generic so order quantities doesn't tip Samsung's hand as to what future Apple products are coming or build quantities the way a CPU order does.

    Dump?

reduce maybe, but since Sammy chips are in the air and the new pro I doubt that "dump" is the appropriate word.

It's all hype, the type apple thrives on.

    20% Price Increase?

Samsung had to raise the money to pay the $2 Billion court judgement against them somehow, why not from the Company that sued them to begin with?
