Facebook stores everything, Google indexed everything, the NSA has a copy of everything, the Swede's also want a copy of everything, the Chinese will produce a cheaper copy of everything, the govt denies everything, big content wants to own everything and the rest of us want everything for nothing ...

    There is latency due to distance and Sweden is not close if you are in North or South America or Australia. It is Facebook and I could careless though, so it doesn't impact me at all. If Facebook closed its doors tomorrow, I wouldn't notice. Hey Zuck, how about moving there as well.

        Yes, but you can add another 5-10ms per router hop to that.

        Although there is no technical reason that fibre could not be run from Sweden to North America without intermediate hops in practice this rarely happens.

        Agree that using Facestab with a small degree of additional latency shouldn't make it suck any more than it already does though.

        1ms is 100km, so 10 ms is 1,000km. Add the network gear and it really make a difference. Trying pinging from the east coast to the west coast; you will never ever see 10ms.

        Par of latency is queue delay, serialization delay and propagation delay. Not many will see 10ms from that data center.

    SI units..?

    I thought The Register was going to stick to SI units (except of course beer and aircraft altitude)..?

    Anyhow, according to the contractor, the facility is 28000 square meters (appr. 300000 square foot), not 900000 square foot.

    While it is cold in the Winter, Luleå isn't in the Arctic. It would need to be another 100km North for that.

      You mean in the 30s? Stalin was pining for the fjords (with a bit of a "let's delay the call to the doctor a bit" from his close adviser circle) pretty early in the 50s.

      The architecture of The Other Socialism is much cleaner though there are retarded eagles and shitty oak leaves galore, much like that horrible WWII memorial crud they built in Washington DC. (ahem!)

      Um, back to the subject. What's the deal with having a bit of plastic? Anyone care to figure out how much energy goes into the motherboard and CPU (during production and lifetime) as opposed to the plastic glitter and a blue LED or two?

    It's sweden why bother?

    I mean unless you are going to round up the people you spy on and put them in offshore camps to tortue them - what's the point in spying on them? It's a complete waste of time and money.

    Swedish taxpayers should demand that some small visible minority are rounded up (possibly people that don't like meatballs or can't assemble IKEA furniture) - it's the only way to get value for money.

    Google get a good PUE because they 'cheat'

    PUE is the power used for your IT versus the power used for everything else needed to support it (cooling, power redundancy, lighting etc)

    However Google use in-rack UPS' and cooling and then claim the power used by those as part of their IT usage so the PUE figure is always going to be very little over 1 regardless of how efficient the facility actually is.

    PUE is clearly a nonsense metric, one that should be sacked off.

    Nice facility though, dry cooling is great, providing you have the space to implement it.

      I agree - PUE is total rubbish

      If you were to invest in more efficient computers then your PUE would go up and make you look bad, the opposite of reality.

      A ratio is ultimately meaningless.

      A more useful measure is performance per watt: how many flops do you get for the total amount of power put in?
