back to article Yahoo! adds 1TB of free storage to Flickr in site revamp

Not content with its $1.1bn acquisition of Tumblr, Marissa Mayer took to a New York stage on Monday evening to debut a redesigned Flickr photo site that includes 1TB free storage for each user – enough room to store 537,731 photos in "full original quality," meaning 6.5 megapixels. "If you took all the photos ever shot in the …

    FAIL

    grrrrrrrrrrrrrrr

The revised Flickr site is slow (ie as in molasses) is so cool it is unusable and double the cost and with less services (ie stats are no longer available) for "Pro" now "ad-free" accounts.

It looks like it was hit by a bad dose of Google black and Windows8.

But most importantly it makes searching, displaying and commenting images on images so much more difficult.

The Flickr blog is full of negative comments.

This is what lies ahead for Tumblr users.

The Flickr site today has none of the feel that made the original Flickr so good to use ..simplicity and speed.

    Fail Yahoo! FAIL!

My Pro account still has stats and the site's running faster than ever.

I really do not get why sites have to become so 'dumbified' - everything is tablet-oriented now. Is that what these sites aim at - easy consumption of 'data' interspersed with ads? Cuz that's apparently still where the money's at.

      Not happy :-(

1TB is a lot of data

I remember back in the late 1990's or so when Microsoft were showing off MS SQL Server's scalability with their terraserver - satellite imagery adding up to 8TB as I recall. That seemed so massive back then! Now it's a flickr account each for a large family.

Re: 1TB is a lot of data

These things do seem to be ballooning far faster than anything else, even disk space. I was reviewing my personal backup strategy a couple of weeks ago and noticed my porn database was up to 240GB and counting. And no, it's not as if I download whatever crap I come across, there's less than 2,000 photo sets on there.

Re: 1TB is a lot of data

240Gb of porn? And you're qualifying this too- it has to meet your quality controls.........

I don't know why you're boasting about the vastness of your porn collection- or its quality, some of us actually have a life.

That last word in your post - replace 'L' with 'W'.

I've a 100Mb fibre connection here. Then again- a Skype video call to my sister (also on 100Mb fibre) less than 100 miles away also failed last night- and we had to resort to manual typing to one another on the stream.

Perhaps the connectivity problems weren't necessarily at Yahoo's end? The UK, The Netherlands and Ireland seem to have had an interesting 24 hours on the internet........

This should be a boon for the Orphan Works debacle that's being pushed through in the UK at present then, millions more photos to be easily orphaned...

    why bother?

I would rather smash my camera into pieces than upload images to any US based outfit.

Because if I were to take a photo right now in my kitchen I would be infringing the copyright of all the household items in the image. So either they will claim ownership of my work or extradite me to hell.

I know that I'm slightly exaggerating but all this corporate copyright trolling does have consequences.

      Re: why bother?

I like to keep my storage local, I run my own NAS, I just wish there was a decent open cloud solution available...

OwnCloud is OK, but its not exactly amazing....

        Re: why bother?

Especially not with ownCloud's client constantly using 100% of one core for larger data stores. I'm sticking with it though, just hoping it improves.

    Flickr ruined

This new version is of no use whatsoever to serious photographers. Mayer has completely ruined it. The aim is to tempt mobile phone cam / app users with lots of free space and an app that's 5 years too late, and then fire ads at them. It won't work. They already have facebook for that. What it has done is alienate every serious photographer, who were the lifeblood of flickr and who do not want their images displayed on a sub-facebook-wall. Great move, Mayer. It's useless to me now so subs cancelled and I'm off to Zenfolio/Smugmug.

thanks for providing some examples of other sites. Will look into these :-(

I know, resistance to change is a natural thing. But, this flickr 'update' is absolutely horrendous. Won't be using this for long now... At least my pro-subscription ends some time next month.

      Re: Flickr ruined

      Oh she, said it explicitly:

"there’s no such thing as Flickr Pro, because today, with cameras as pervasive as they are, there is no such thing really as professional photographers, when there’s everything is professional photographers. Certainly there is varying levels of skills, but we didn’t want to have a Flickr Pro anymore, we wanted everyone to have professional quality photos, space, and sharing.” – Marissa Mayer, Yahoo Event, May 2013

Probably there are no such thing really as a professional CEO anymore - all they can do is try to slap more ads on everything.

Surely this just opens up real easy theft of images now, especially now they will be of a decent resolution and that whole orphan works act

I guess most people wont care as they will recieve a comment such as "great HDR, doesnt hurt my eyes atall"

    WTF?

    not much of an "upgrade"

Previously, Pro customers got unlimited storage for $25 a year with no adverts. Now you get 1TB for $50 a year (the only benefit being the removal of adverts), or 2TB for an eye watering $499 a year. Not much benefit for their loyal paying customers there, then!

Flickr used to be a great place to store your photos online with a minimal interface and decent speed. Now it runs like crap and looks like the bastard offspring of MyPlace and Facebook.

    Massively underwhelmed by this "upgrade"...

    1. GP1

Re: not much of an "upgrade"

      Exactly this.

Many people in the UK get a Flickr Pro account because they BT Internet clients. Me for example. No word on the email about that and nothing from BT so far. Being a very very light user of Flickr whatever the changes are behind the scenes probably won't have a great effect on me but may for others. Presumably at some point BT Yahoo will provide a pointer for us - I assume the easiest thing would somply be to move to the ad free 1Tb version that would suffice for most people. So the benefit of the freebies notionally increases to $50.

On the other hand if people ar throwing high res images and videos into the storage 1Tb, for a heavy user, may not be much. I certainly have more than that at home, though I can;t imagine wanting to load the entire "library" to Flickr. Especially at the connection speeds typically available.

I would guess that the business modelling suggests that the deal will far exceed the expectations of the majority of users and the loss of a few high volume users, should that occur, will have little if any negative impact. It might even be positive fo rthe bottom line.

Having had a brief look at the new format it seems to be another "me too" mishmash that lands you somewhere interesting if you are inquisitve but not necessarily where you want to be. I suppose one can control that. I will try to gather some enthusiasm for going searching for what it can do for me.

    Bit pointless paying now

I'm trying to take my time because I always hate it when a site I like is made over to look like shit.

But I used to pay for flickr for two reasons - stats and storage space.

Now they've removed the need to pay for storage space I'm looking at just paying for the stats. That seems fairly hard to justify, but fortunately, they've made the decision easier by doubling the price.

    I'm out.

flickr have taken away words, structure and the control of presentation - all of which has the effect of detracting from meaning.

anyone left who still wants to use it. I'm in the process of deleting my account I've had since 2005. I can't live with the pain it causes in my eyes.

It was my last social media presence too. I'm probably going to stop using the internet.

There's a maximum size limit of 200MB per photo, and users can also upload 1080p HD videos of up to 1GB in size and a playback length of up to three minutes each.

Yes, but can compressed video formats be uploaded? Three minutes isn't really that much.

    so...

has anyone written a FlickrFileSystem module yet so we can store other data (non-images) in the free 1-TB of space they are giving out? ie - this big 300-gig backup of my boot drive? Break it into a bunch of 200-meg chunks, encapsulate it in something that looks like a JPG and send it off to Flickr. That would be cool.

    Other Services with stats?

Maybe this looks good on an iPad - it certainly looks silly on a 27" monitor... Seems that they have caught the Windows 8 disease - everything must look the same on all devices. Actually, now, it's okay to make them look different from device to device, as long as it is appropriate for the device you are using...

Anyway, are there any other sides that

    1) allow you to embed pictures in a separate web site (ie my own web site has the "im src" tag, but it points to an image being pulled from flickr), and

    2) give stats on image views?

    Thanks
