back to article Nokia teases world+dog with snap of new 4G Lumia 928

Nokia nerds are all aquiver about the Finnish giant’s latest smartphone, the Lumia 928 - but it appears to be little more than a Lumia 920 for US operator Verizon. The 928 model now has a page on the Nokia website albeit with little information beyond a picture of the device which, with the page’s URL, confirms the phone’s …

The NL 920 of course supports 4G LTE.

My Lumia 920 has something called "4G" is there some difference between 4G and 4G LTE that I'm missing? I must admit I don't bother to keep up with that kind of stuff.

I'm using LTE on my 920, it's flipping marvellous. 3G wasn't slow but it was slow to respond at times.

I guess there is some different LTE frequencies. So while the 920 works in the UK it might not elsewhere.

      1. GBL Initialiser

Works in Europe too (and it's a damn sight cheaper, at least in Denmark). I think the 920 was the first phone (or one of the first) that could manage 4G in the UK.

Oh dear me Reg, you are a bunch of michevious little tykes aren't you?

Those of us with more than two neurones firing at the same time are aware that the Finns will not be launching a new flagship before the summer (to include both their hardware update with regard to their camera and "Blue" from you-know-who).

    LTE

the 920 supports bands 1,3,7,8,20 which means it works on 2100,1800,2600,900 and 800MHz. In the US they are using 700,1700 and 1900 for LTE (bands 17,4 and 25), so it looks like the 928 will support LTE in the US but maybe not elsewhere.

      Re: LTE

      The AT&T version of the 920 supports AT&T's bands (4 and 17). It's the Global, non-carrier-locked, model that uses 1,3,7,8 and 20.

    14th May event?

There is a Nokia event scheduled for 14th May in London. It wouldn't make sense to announce a Verizon-compatible phone in the UK, so there must presumably be more to it.

I'll stick with my QWERTY thanks.

I can't stand touch screen only, so slow and cumbersome, I hate predictive texting, I like to use my brain and type properly, and on a REAL QWERTY keypad.

I'll stick with my trusty BlackBerry 9810 Torch for now until the new BlackBerry Torch based on OS10 comes out.

How in the fsck does using "REAL QWERTY" mean that you're using your brain? You clearly didn't post this from a "REAL QWERTY" keyboard if we apply this rule to your post.

      WTF?

Re: I'll stick with my QWERTY thanks.

The thing I don't understand is why you are posting about your dislike of phones without physical keyboards here and now. You realize there have been so many phones with this set up released in the last 5 years, and this has become so accepted, that these comments are irrelevant to this article, don't you?

Had a tinker witha 920 and that was enough to put me off for life. Are people really THAT desperate for an alternative to iOS and Android that they would put up with Windows Phone?

Spot on. iOS and 'roid both have a GUI based in last decade. 2013 brings a cleaner, newer and faster interface requiring far fewer presses to get the information you want. So bollox to the ladies slating it. We'll wait for them to catch up with the times. (and lets face it, if Apple released this interface, it would have been praise for being innovative)

    Ditched the wireless charging maybe?

    1. TeeCee Gold badge

      Re: "Thinner and lighter"

Yup, I cannot for the life of me understand why wireless charging is supposed to be The Next Big Thing.

Add weight and bulk (that will be a royal pain in the arse all the time) for the induction coils just to avoid plugging a lead into it (which may be a minor inconvenience once a day)? Why would you want to even think of doing that?

      1. GBL Initialiser

        Re: "Thinner and lighter"

The only thing I can think of is that it would be good if their plan to have cafes have wireless charging stations on the tables had panned out. As much as I love my 920 I have to admit that the battery life is a bit of a pain in the backside.

Yeah, tried most things. I managed to squeeze out a bit more life by changing some settings and I always close apps anyway. I haven't yet seen anywhere near two days though and using the GPS & maps a few times means you hadn't better use it for much else.

        Re: "Thinner and lighter"

What does it add? To my knowledge it's a coil and a chip - not sure how much thickness or weight but the S4 is a lot lighter and thinner than the 920 so unless you have something to backup your claim of bulk I think its a little unfair to brush all qi charging as being terrible.

Personally I wouldn't pay £50 for a charger, but as Nokia gave me one free I am very happy with it. I'd pay say up to £10 - £15 for it. Yeah, it's a novelty. Then again my laptop users demaning Wifi even though they have 1Gig to the desktop is the same - just can't be arsed with cables.

Case in point: I lie in bed, decide it's sleep time and just place my phone on the bedside cabinet. It's charging.

My girlfiends iPhone 5 however requires her hanging half out of the bed, trying to find the cable, finally plugs it in only to find it's the wrong way round.

Yeah, it's not a problem. Have I even thought of it as being a problem? Nope. Am I glad I have it - you betcha. If only to have a smug smile on my face when my phone charges by placing it down and the miss's shiny shiny iPhone means she's scrabbling for the cables.

You mean on the *reversible* Lightning connector which doesn't have a "wrong" way round? Unless you count the wrong end of the cable and she's trying to connect the USB end to the phone.

            Re: "Thinner and lighter"

I'll tell her she has a dud then. It goes in both ways, but it's 50/50 if it'll charge or not. She did have problems with it when she first got it (wouldn't charge at all).

I have a Pre with inductive charging

The coil's in the back cover. If it weren't for the outline molded in the plastic and the contacts you wouldn't know its there. It's a small thing but marvelously convenient It'salso one of the reasons I'm in no hurry to upgrade.

S4 does not have wireless charging natively. You have to buy an attachment for it.

        Re: "Thinner and lighter"

Wireless charging is not a life changing feature, but it's nice. The biggest benefit is that, when I check the time on my phone in the night, I don't have to be wary of the cable trailing over the bedside table, I pick it off the charging plate, check the time and put it back. Also, my actual charging cable lives in my suitcase because I only ever use it when I travel, it's one less thing to remember. Again, not necessary, but nice.

The thickness of the 920 does not bother me, it fits in my pocket fine.

    Why the hoohar?

Don't understand the fuss. 920 already does 4G very nicely thank you (which the article implies it doesn't). Only thing that's different is xeon flash rather than LED which I wish I had to be honest - and apparently it's slightly slimmer..... Not sure if that's engineering refinement or just a smaller battery.

Still both handsets are really rather nice.

    1. Andrew 66

      Re: Why the hoohar?

No real need for any fuss. It's basically the same as the 920, but a Verizon exclusive because the American mobile phone market doesn't understand how competition works.

    Thumb Up

After having used Android since 2009, I got a Lumia 920 in January and, apart from a few fall outs with it where apps like Spotify have been missing and then inferior to their Android equivalents when they have surfaced, I have generally found the experience of Windows phone 8 better* than Android. Everything is better integrated, there is no crapware installed by the phone maker or the network, and the phone does everything I need it to. I look forward to seeing what they bring out next (genuinely new models, not a repackaging of an old one, mind. I'm not going to be ready for another 2 years or so yet, either).

*In my opinion, for my needs, etc.

Can be an effective way of drawing attention to your product. Perhaps this is the start of a trend. I can imagine a Garden of Eden themed ad for Apple. Not sure how you make Android sexy, though, since it has generally favoured function over form.

EE just gave me a free upgrade to 4G for my Lumia 920 if I took the next level up in data allowance! (+£5 a month - which takes me from 1GB to 2GB)

I knew I was wise to pass on the initial half the data?! for £5 extra 4G 'offer'.....

They are cold calling with this offer - good deal for anyone with Orange who declined the initial 4G tax...
