    What I don't understand...

    Is that many of the same people who do not trust their government with the ability to tap all their communications (fearing they will use that to oppress the people) trust their government to be the only ones with weapons.

      Gun nuts keep tossing around the figure that more people in the US are murdered by hammers than by guns. If that's the case, they should rest easy that if the government takes our guns away, we'll still have the hammers.

      Funny thing though. All of these super conservatives who don't trust the government with anything are supporting this bill which, essentially, lets the government do exactly what it wants.

    At least the vote isn't veto-proof.

    The vote as taken is two shy of the 2/3 majority needed to enact CISPA over a presidential veto. Let's see where the Senate goes on this first. If the Senate does not pass CISPA as written by the House, the conference committee will kick in which will forge a compromise bill that will require a revote.

      Veto-proof? Why do you think President O'Bama would veto it? No USian president has ever willingly relinquished any additional powers granted him by the Congress.

    The only bills at all that pass these days are the one that screw over the vast majority of the general public and are passed in middle of night quietly and usually almost unanimously.

    The fabulous state of U.S. politics pretty much guarantees this bill won't get through the Senate. It is going nowhere. Those jackasses wouldn't pass a bill through both houses even if it meant free blowjobs and ice cream for everyone and the end of global terrorism.

      Of course they wouldn't pass a bill that meant the end of global terrorism. They wouldn't be able to keep passing more laws to abolish basic rights and impose oppressive security, their friends would lose all their lovely profits from supplying all those counter-terrorism services, lots of spooks would be out of work - it would be awful!

    Why Bother??

    Pushing through legislation in one forum which wont get approved in the next and dooes not have support from the president who can veto it?? Just another ridiculous example of how disfunctional the american government is if you ask me.....they cannot agree on anything that might actually benefit the country but continue to work on crapislation that while is important from a national security standpoint really is not going to do much to help the broader population.

    When are politicians ever going to understand that these uneccessary laws only serve to further trample the freedoms proscibed in the US Constitution that even protect the damned politicians?

    Do you think they will squawk when the NSA/CIA/FBI/ETC starts bugging their offices (and emails now) just like Nixon and J Edgar Hoover did to their opponents?

    NO LAWS (OR SECURITY THEATER) WILL EVER HELP STOP THE CONCERTED EFFORTS OF A TRUE TERRORIST!

    This putrid crap is the brainchild of alphabet soup agencies that only continue to exist if they lie to the American People about how effective they are.

    Only the really dumb or mentally deficient terrorists ever get caught and in the meantime, we lose a bit of our freedoms every day. Don't say you weren't warned, if you fail to speak up it's your fault.

    Mark my words....Soon, there will be nothing left to lose and it will be too late to do anything about it.

      Please note that it says "among these" when referring to the unalienable Rights. "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" are just the examples of some of those rights. Many others, like the Right to speak your mind in public and to be secure in your papers against unreasonable searches are mentioned in the Constitution.

      People seem to forget that the "Founding Fathers" wanted to get the point across that people have more Rights as individuals than just the ones they mentioned.

      If we let them, the governments and big corporations will strip us of ALL those Rights if we let them.

      Sooner or later the People will make a line in the sand and say "this is as far as it goes".

      I just hope it will not be too late when it happens.

        No they won't.

        What we've had in the US and Britain for the last 200 years is a rare exception to the natural state of man. The two previous instances in which men were somewhat free lasted for similar time periods. Looking through history the natural state of man is to be ruled by despots wondering if you are ever going to be safe or have enough to eat.

        Most any of what happened, when it happened, or how to fix it. Because most ignore a key factor in that quote: that the rights are granted by God, whose name is now verbotten in government and in many public squares. Until that is reversed the path will be ever downward.

          Well, whichever one it is, let him come down here and sort it out.

          One thing I will say is that America is becoming more of a religious crack pot state, not less (compared to the secular basis of the original government) which roughly correlates with the degradation to which you refer.

          You need more sensible thinking not less, but I don't see a great deal of that coming from America at the moment.

          Oh and by the way, those rights were granted by a group of people, some of which were atheists. "God" had nothing to do with it.

        If there was ever a reason to use the rights endowed in the Second Amendment (and the Jeffersonian interpretation of WHY the Second Amendment exists IE to allow the people to overthrow an unjust and tyrannical government), then now is the time for all good men to come to the aid of their country.... I have not forgotten the rights and obligations of citizenship.
