back to article LG: Oi! Samsung's not the only one with eyeball-tracking smartphones

LG announced that its Optimus G Pro smartphone will pause video playback when it detects that its owner has stopped looking at it - just hours before Samsung unveiled the same feature for the Galaxy S4. Eyeball tracking, using the mobile's built-in camera to scroll pages and notice when the user is no longer staring, is set to …

LG? Didn't know they still made phones, but hey will this set off another round of patent wars now that LG got theirs on the market first?

LG announced it first, the one first to market would be the S4

    Next up?

Windows phones takes themselves back to Redmond when they notice nobody looks at them in the shop?

Android phones spying on everyone in the shop and posting it on YouTube?

Loads of not-so-good possibilities here - I prefer my kit not to be too bright..

How about just showing the classical Windows Blue Screen of Death.

That'd surely get a few confused glances from the casual passer by.

I cant think of anything worse,

This is an example of Tech for Tech's sake.

if I happen to look up because someone says : wanna cup of tea, I don't want to look down to see its paused.

or scrolled to the end of a doc, because the dog licked my foot and I temporarily glanced tot he side.

if I ever have this, I think it will be turned off pretty much immediately.

not even mentioning that its starting to get a bit big brother,

because you just know google will follow up with,

'watch what adds your looking at' tech, and then it all starts getting a little creepy.

Things I'd like to see in a future iteration of a 'smart' phone.

    1. Absolutely no smart cam watching me all the time.

    2. Absolutely no smart cam stopping a movie when I am not looking at it.

    3. No extra software/services running in the background doing medial things like constantly looking at me. Save it for the battery, thank you very much.

    4. No more infra-red. "Yes, I control my TV with my phone" - signed: Absolutely Nobody

Okay, that is what I don't want to see. Here is what I do like to see:

    5. GPS is a God-send. Let the Einsteins focus on getting better location services instead of eye tracking, head nodding etc...

    6. Dedicated camera button. Once to turn on, once again to take a pic and long-hold to start video recording. Not too difficult, right?

    7. Easy sd card access without having to take out the battery * already in most new smart phones.

    8. Less touch sensitive screens. Isn't there a slider where I can set the sensitivity level? Every time I watch a freaking movie on my S3 I accidentally touch either the screen (pause), home button (go back to menu).

    9. Stereo cam and 3d screen. Ohh... 3D.... Porn comes to mind, but No! I want to see Google Earth in full 3d! Awesome!!!

You got more, let us know!

Re: Things I'd like to see in a future iteration of a 'smart' phone.

I want more networked TVs/disc players with remote control Android (or iPhone) apps - works nicely for my little WD Live TV box and I'm a lot less likely to (a) misplace my phone or (b) have to replace the battery in it. Plus the remote control app can use the keyboard so text entry is better than scrolling around an on-screen keyboard (although BBC iPlayer app in the WD box has limited support of this, grrr).

Agreed that this shouldn't be an IR port in the phone, though.

That way I can take all the batteries out of the plethora of remote controls I have and recycle them into the plethora of garish plastic toys my kids use.

"plethora of garish plastic toys my kids use"

and they still play with the box. A kids imagination is infinately larger than any of the toy manufacturers.

It begs the question why have you wasted a ton of cash.

        IR how retro.

Samsung's next phone should add all sorts of retro tech. They could bring back RS232, tape answerphone or an extending aerial.

Sorry, I control my TV and sky box with my phone. It's not a decicated device, but I can and occasionally do.

    Already exists, kind of.

This is the same sort of feature as "Smart Stay" on the Galaxy 3 and Note, isn't it?
