back to article Chinese search engine giant Baidu forges ARM servers

Chip maker Marvell has notched up its third public design win for an ARM server, this one at Baidu, one of the two big search engine giants in China. Avi Liebermensch, manager of server products at the maker of ARM processors and other kinds of chips, tells El Reg that the Baidu server is based on the company's Armada XP …

    WTF?

    Confusing headline?

"Forges" implies fakes... but that doesn't seem to be the case?

      Forge:

      verb (used with object)

      1. to form by heating and hammering; beat into shape.

      2. to form or make, especially by concentrated effort: to forge a friendship through mutual trust.

      3. to imitate (handwriting, a signature, etc.) fraudulently; fabricate a forgery.

    Hmmm...

I'm thinking one of these units would make quite a nice home media server.

    ARM Trickle

Hmmmm, Intel should be getting worried. The trickle of ARM based servers is small at the moment, but if users start saying that they're great then it could easily become a flood.

      Re: ARM Trickle

It has been pretty amazing to see how fast the focus in so many segments has went from raw overall performance to performance per watt. Intel consistently has stayed a generation ahead of everyone else fabrication wise (but not low power design wise obviously) so they do still have that. Still they may be forced to rejoin the ARM market to stay relevant eventually and boy wouldn't that be piss on their Wheaties.

Agreed. I don't know why Intel seemingly refuse to do it. If they did an ARM SOC it could easily be the best one on the market; their silicon processing prowess would be a big advantage.

Intel will not do ARM SoC, but they will do MIPS SoC. The fight will be between ARM and Imagination, with Intel behind the scene directing Imagination to take on ARM+Mali with their MIPS+SGX combo.
