If one carries out business in a corrupt country

Then one does or one does not carry out business in a corrupt country. Who is the first to stop carrying out business in a corrupt country. No body.

    The President's daughter

Could you think of anything more reliable than the President's daughter except the father of course. Did anybody do, in the good old times, any business with Idi Amin. Swedes have this feeling that the rest of the world should adopt to ideals they think they adopt. Now where did I loose the thread.

    Uzbekistani?

Uzbek, as in Afghan, Tajik, Kyrgyz, etc & not in Pakistani.

    When in Rome

    Do as the Romans do.

When in Uzbekistan... you get the idea.

I absolutely hate that attitude. It seems to imply that its fine to turn off your moral compass so long as your in a country where that sort of thing is common. Well guess what - its still a dodgy, morally corrupt practice that HURTS the country your doing business in.

No one would turn around and say that joining in for a bit of gang rape was fine, because everyone else was doing it...

It's a bit like the attitude that it's acceptable to ignore the accepted conventions of grammar and punctuation where those conventions are commonly ignored by others.

Have two downvotes ... Oh, I can only give you one. It must be "you're" lucky day!

      Not really.

Either you decide you can't do business there because you'd have to do something you find wrong or you decide you can do business there because you can also use it as an opportunity to improve things, but you don't decide to do business there and help maintain the status quo at the same time as if you had nothing to do with it.

In this type of business you take your moral high stance *before* you decide whether or not you want to do your business in the place like that.

It is pointless to go there and pretend you are Mother Theresa - you just won't get the business and it *will* go to one of your competitors.

          You are right, of course.

You are supposed to have a shady middleman...

so your company will not 'officially' get involved in bribery, etc.

Looks like they've had one. Only it/she had a problem with the shade...

    FAIL

    No excuses

When your business practices even run afoul of the United States of Corporate Whores laws you know you have no ethic compass (foreign bribery illegal). This from a country (US) that often allows its defense companies to sell to both sides in a conflict.
