I'm worried about some elements of this. Can it be classed as one of those 'extreme' images?

Just wait a few billion years.

You won't need a telescope then.

Well not every pixel obviously and I think you mean is a star.

The ones with any planets around them would be suns. So we won't know for sure until we get a closer look.

"that each pixel in the picture is a sun!"

M31 contains some 1,000,000,000,000 stars. You would need terapixel images to make the above be true.

The universe never ceases to amaze.

    But it's so small...

I was expecting something, like... a zillion light-years across!

IT? It must have taken loads of IT to process those images...

    Galactic collisions anyone?

The image seems to show at least two planes of eliptical rings at different inclinations.

Andromeda, named after the mythical Greek princess known for her beauty

    1) Andromeda is the daughter of Cephus and Cassiopeia, who are Ethiopian, not Greek.

    2) Andromeda is "known for her beauty" because of her mother's hubris in declaring she was more beautiful than the Nereids, and was punished by Poseidon.

BoJo was right, a classical education does eventually come in handy.

I read "...more beautiful that the Nereids.." as "more beautiful than the NERDS"

Which is just as punishable in my books

      Lol

      Glad to hear it.

My daughter is taking classical civilisations (Greek and Roman) at 'o'level (or whatever they are called these days) instead of History (for which the topic is "The politics of Europe in the inter-war years"). Got to admit the classical one sounds more interesting, and it now looks like it may come in handy if she ever becomes a commentard.

Though surely it's a better word to describe the subject of the photo rather than those who took it? The author might want to look up "galaxy" in the dictionary...

You might find that most of the work behind these stunning images was actually done in the UK & Europe. The SPIRE camera was built in Cardiff, the PACS camera was built in France and this project is led by Ghent University... Not belittling the help of JPL & the US, of course.

And yes, it did take a lot of IT to process the images :)
