back to article Apple ships 'completely redesigned' iTunes 11

Apple has released what it modestly deems to be "the best iTunes yet." That would be iTunes 11, which Cupertino touts as having a "dramatically simplified player, a completely redesigned Store, and iCloud features you'll love." When iTunes 11 was previewed on September 12 during the iPhone 5 rollout event in San Francisco, it …

Simply hover your mouse over the intended portion of the info-bar, and it'll tell you how much data you're dealing with.

On a side note, I do wish these companies would design their products to fit in with the intended OS. It's a bit jarring to have a monochrome Win 8 and then suddenly all of these blue gradients...

I'm just glad Ctrl-S will allow you to have the sidebar open permanently.

      Re: ...hover over info bar

The trouble with UI elements that appear when you hover the mouse, is that there is no hover event in a touch UI.

I think designing UI elements that require onmouseover is a little short sighted. I'm certainly finding that I'm rethinking my approach to UI design, and noting the general move towards supporting touch interfaces, I wonder whether hover events (should) have had their day?

        Re: ...hover over info bar

I think it is short sighted to think of a single UI. (Windows 8 is a perfect example of this.) You tend to find mice on content creation systems, you tend to find touch interfaces on content consumption systems. The UI elements (and task at hand) is much more complex on content creation systems. That is why I hope to never lose mouse-over events - my interface is significantly more complex and *needing* those hints at less frequently used functionality (as well as other uses for this option).

          Re: ...hover over info bar

I personally don't think they should got rid of them altogether. There are appropriate uses for it and the basic info of what an info bar colour means is not IMHO an appropriate use. To me a more appropriate use would be using it to to get detailed information on the various areas of the info bar (although I would prefer a mouse click, myself).

Why are these still so expensive though, especially for movies & TV?

It isn't iTunes (although it is of course more expensive than Google Play), but when it is cheaper to buy and rip the physical media, something is broken.

    Sync books still needs work

My biggest gripe is that the dialog to sync selected books to a IOS device still needs work. Currently the dialog will only display book icons with individual check boxes. There's no way to display the books in list form to facilitate the quick selection of multiple items in a manner consistent with Finder.

In general, iTunes is an abomination that should be broken up into three separate applications: library, store and devices. It's just too unwieldy - trying to adapt a single interface to accommodate three unrelated functionalities just doesn't work.

    Ah, well ...

Re: Sync books still needs work

Sync (in general, not just books) is a content randomization button.

When you have (for example) a 32GB iPhone and 1,277GB of media in iTunes on the PC, then when you unleash the mindless Sync function - it's too stupid to notice that 1277 > 32 - so it randomly loads in some stuff and then stops with an error message. I've never seen it work properly.

To those that will claim I'm doing it wrong, I'm hovering the cursor over the Sync button and then clicking it. It's Apple, it's supposed to "just work". Yet another Apple SW Fail.

This is going to take some getting used to

Optimistically for Windows users, the interface looks like a complete rewrite, albeit possibly motivated by someone incessantly asking "can't we make it any brighter?". The binary isn't substantially different in size on the Mac though so let's not get too excited.

The advertised 'albums' view seems like a non-starter to me unless you have only about six of them but 'artists' works quite well and 'songs' provides the classic layout if you want it. Colour icons are back in the sidebar but the bar itself is no longer essential to navigation. The new control icons at the top are a huge improvement — the silhouette destroying circles they used to sit in are gone, making everything visually clearer. It's also good that they've made the mini-player more obvious but it now seems to have lost its progress bar, which is a shame.

Re: This is going to take some getting used to

I may be on my own, but I think UI design for media managers hit its useful peak years ago.

The number of use-cases for them is pretty low and most people just want to access a song/album/artist/playlist/genre quickly.

Even my original Nomad Jukebox Zen (how I miss thee) had an entirely usable interface with just a clickable scroll wheel. I could build playlists on the fly back in 2002, a feature that went missing from many subsequent products.

On the desktop, I'm still a WinAmp user. Sure, I don't get to see the album art while browsing (though I could), but I've just always found it quick and easy to browse my music collection and sync a playlist to any device.

IMHO it's hard to beat the interface of Foobar2000. The default interface is simple and well laid out and supports multiple playlists. Its fully customisable so you can make it look blingy or add stuff like lyrics and album covers. I use the default myself

Re: This is going to take some getting used to (@Ian Yates)

While probably true, iTunes is still a bit too much of a feature mess to be described as merely a media manager. It's a media manager that also manages applications, streaming (both local and remote), performs device synchronisation — including its content and that inherently belonging to other applications, and has only recently stopped being a social media client.

I'm an advocate for splitting it up but I guess Apple want to be able to give Windows users who buy iPods, iPhones, etc, a single thing to install (and, for whatever reason, won't just make that thing 'a driver').

So far I like it a lot, the design has been cleaned up and simplified without removing functionality. The thing I *really* like about it, however is that they've made it more customisable than is Apple's wont. i really like the artists/album view thing - most especially on the Movies and TV Shows tabs. Nice to be able to see all the key details from the ID3 tags displayed at a glance instead of having cmd-i to see it.

there's a bug on the device sync screens where it tries to size the group box on the left with the item box on the right. So when you have some TV Shows, and some of them have a LOT of episodes, scrolling around to see shows further down the list gets interesting. Surprising really, scroll boxes in OS X are usually independent of each other and respond to where the mouse is hovering, not the window it is in, so perhaps it's the bug they've been trying to fix all month long.

    iTunes

Hmm. Looks like they've just removed half the interface. Does this mean you can no longer drag and drop because I trust iTunes to manage my media as much as I'd trust a cabbage to manage my finances.

iTunes has traditionally taken all the lessons and experience built up over the past twenty years about how to build an intuitive user interface, then implemented the exact opposite. It gets so many basics of interface design wrong I can't help thinking it must be done intentionally, just for a laugh.

Screen resolutions are very high these days - let's hide features, scatter them inexplicably around the screen and make people roll over to find them. Everybody LOVES blindly scanning round an interface to find what they're after!

Speaking of which, where shall we put the Add Playlist button - in the playlist section?

Of course not, just stick it on the bottom of the interface with the most vague icon we can think of.

Should we use our graphic interface for all our navigation?

Nah, let's put some buttons into the pseudo digital information screen for the hell of it. Because everyone will expect navigation to appear in the information screen won't they?

Shall we exclusively use dialogue boxes to announce critical features such as, "iTunes is about to delete everything off your iPod"?

Great idea! Everybody reads those. It's not like people just click the button they think is most likely to get rid of them.

    up to eleven

disappointed you didn't manage a "Spinal Tap" pun into the review.

Well, it's one louder, isn't it? It's not ten. You see, most blokes, you know, will be playing at ten. You're on ten here, all the way up, all the way up, all the way up, you're on ten on your guitar. Where can you go from there? Where?

Can you now zoom-in on the 'Store...

Or do you still have to get off the couch and go take a closer look at the TV to browse film rentals?

    Complete Redesign???

Doesn't look like that much of a complete redesign to me. Windows 7 Start Menu to Windows 8 start screen....THAT is a complete redesign! (Not a successful one but it is a complete redesign)

But this....it looks like all they did was shuffle around a few sections on the screen, and hide the sidebar by default and apply just a tiny wee bit of touch-up to the chrome at the top and slap a new icon on it.

But...Apple ...with their marketing engine and hype and such....call it a redesigned iTunes. Ungh! My wife still has her iPod Touch 2nd Gen, and when I hold iOS 4 up next to iOS 6....I really see nothing changing for the most part. Certainly nothing that deserves two version numbers newer! So....why did it take so very long for this to come out then?

    Getting it right

As that month drew to a close, an Apple spokesman informed world+dog that "The new iTunes is taking longer than expected, and we wanted to take a little extra time to get it right."

Too bad they didn't do this with Apple Maps on iOS 6.

Rivals iOS 6 Maps for reputation damage capability

OK, there are no bendy bridges or misplaced zoos, but this app is at the core of Apple's business model and this upgrade drops useful features (http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57556548-37/7-features-apple-killed-off-in-itunes-11/) and contains at least one terrible bug (https://discussions.apple.com/message/20430860#20430860)

No Coverflow - bit of a backward step visually

No iTunes DJ - my favourite way to get a controllable but random playlist is gone

No option to set gapless playback - when you want that, you really want it.

Fail to update play count or last played time - fail, even if there is a sort of workaround.

    Itunes 11 - Apple You B*****DS!

I installed iTunes 11 this afternoon.

I had a well managed iTunes 10 library with lots of playlists, almost all album art imbedded in ID3 tags, and about 120,000 tracks, all properly tagged.

Now I have NO playlists - they've ALL been removed. AARRGGGHHHHH!

Now about half of my library is missing. Now Christmas for example has only 11 tracks rather than 47

I can't find the column browser at all - the one view I used all the time.

It is currently busy "determining gapless playback" for 24,186 tracks and so is slower than a snail on strike

The search box - always one of iTunes' best functions - now keeps asking to search the iTunes store rather than my library.

WHY do they choose to hide the "track number" and "disc number" fields by default? It makes no sense and is totally beyond me.

WHERE is the "total number of tracks/total size" information that used to be handily on show at the bottom of the iTunes window?

All the TV shows that I carefully ripped and labelled in ipod format, with season info and the like - all gone.

And last of all, WHY, in the name of all things holy, does iTunes STILL not have a RESCAN LIBRARY BUTTON to add new media and remove deleted and renamed items? This should have been there on DAY ONE, not still missing 11 versions down the bloody line.

This is the biggest abortion of an update I think I have ever seen in iTunes.

Listen Apple - I WANT MY LIBRARY BACK. I WANT MY PLAYLISTS BACK. YOU ARE A BUNCH OF UTTER, UTTER, UTTER, UTTER.....

    getting the status bar back

"WHERE is the "total number of tracks/total size" information that used to be handily on show at the bottom of the iTunes window?"

OK to answer one of my own fails at least. To get the status bar back you have to.....

    1. CTRL+B to bring up the menu bar

    2. then view>show status bar to bring it back

Good grief - talk about hidden settings! Without the menu bar you can't access it!

Re: getting the status bar back

I bet all your other stuff is there: try CTRL + S to show the sidebar.....

I've pretty much got it back to how I liked it now: figuring out how to attach new album art took a few minutes though:

      go to albums view

right-click -> show Info on the album that needs a cover

Drop a jpg into the Artwork panel on the Multiple Item Information dialog or double click the panel to choose.
