So a company sues the Chinese government and gets targeted by Chinese hackers?
Hmmm, I'm sure there must be a connection there somewhere...
A Californian software company which sued the Chinese government for pirating its flagship content filtering product has revealed how it was targeted by hackers from the People’s Republic for the three years of the resulting legal proceedings. Santa Barbara-based Solid Oak Software filed the civil lawsuit against China after …
Seriously? Your telling me you expect a company which has ~8 employees and sales of around $3.4 million US should be more than able to defend against a country with ~1.4 BILLION people and revenues that are around $11.3 trillion US....ARE YOU OUT OF YOUR MIND?? Riiiiiiiiight. Please go back under whatever rock it was that you crawled out from.
should be more than able to defend against a country with ~1.4 BILLION people
.. who have ALL retired from farming and tending rice to become hackers with sufficiently elevated skills to defeat a company that is supposed to specialise in security, thousands of miles away. Oh, and they're all exactly the right age to acquire l33t skillz as well.
Apply a bit of sanity. We have already politicians for the paranoia..
We are going to find out how much regualr posters get to know about sociopolitics when we find out that god badgers are more badger than gold around here.
No offence Fred, you can have my brass one if you want but...
Having lots of people to mind fuck makes you pretty good at what Voland has intimated. Let me tell you how GCHQ got started...
Once apponner time there was this really average sized country but it lived in a place called Atlantic Approaches. Then one day, one of the wicked witches came to the feast......
<to be continued.>
No need to hand off your brass ones (oh, sorry, you meant the badge) :).
You have to stay reasonably focused on the facts or you'll be prime candidate to be messed with through PSYOPS, hence my comment. I'm always VERY weary of automatic assumptions people make without having been close to evidence, because explanations are never that easy. If the Chinese are so clever, why are they not bouncing their traffic via other countries? You cannot assume top notch l33t skillz without following through on that logic..
Re: Seriously
I am trying to tell you that the amount of resource a country of 1.4 billion with 11.3 trillion USD has actually spent on it is not likely to be anywhere near proportional to these numbers.
Further to this - the company has 0 online presence, a low volume blog in Chinese and an email address box. That leaves their one person "inbox" and their 8 people corporate network as the sole items to defend.
That is something which a content filtering system is supposed to do for a living. It is called EAT YOUR OWN DOGFOOD.
If they have failed in doing so, well that says everything that there is to be said here. Me coat...
You appear to have confused content filtering (Cybersitter - blocking websites unsuitable for children or Chinese proles) with a full network security product (anti-virus, anti-spyware, firewall etc. ). Eating your own dogfood doesn't apply - they were under full-scale cyber attack - so software for blocking unsuitable websites would have been of no help.
Creating and maintaining a full network security suite would probably be beyond the abilities of a small 8 person development team, whose prior experience has been focused on making one product do one task well.
Especially when you can rarely prove beyond doubt who is behind it, just the IP address of where the hacks are coming from. Even then there is questionable doubt as it could be coming from a drone PC or a proxy server. Hiding your hacking activities behind a Russian or Chinese IP address is surely well known.
It's like firing missiles from an invisible and very fast moving ship.
It's nowt to do with it being foreign and from a different culture but everything to do with it being dumb as shit! If it was a good product i'd be cool with the name but it isint, its vile shit! It deserves having the piss taken out of its name in just the same way Apple is totally farty name for a company too - I mean seriously, Apple, what were they smoking? oh yeah, they liked a toke or so I am told, explains it!
Paris, because she also gets accused of cultural insensitivities, but with her its from the French for trashing the name of their capital city!
I'm probably going to be hacked by a French-Chinese, Paris Hilton loving hacker collective now, great!
Hahahaha ... see the silly little asians, all as funny as a Chinese drill sergeant, shrieking orders in his high-pitched squeaky voice ... and foolish little people with absurd names like "Quong Dong" .. who could take that seriously, really?
Armies of university educated computer scientists, hardly old enough to shave, staring all night long into the pale light of their LCD screens, the brightest students recruited by the People's Army ...
Reports of U.S. corporations hacked and raided, intellectual and trade secrets peeled away layer by layer; Pentagon networks infiltrated; infrastructure control links subverted with hidden triggers to disrupt power and natural gas and water supplies; and wholesale probes and raids into the West's financial centers ... with an occasional retaliation against small western companies who dare to resist cyber-theft .
Open warfare from our "Most Favored Trading Partner?" Hahahahahaha .. silly little foreigners and their different ways of doing things! It must be the Iranians ... yeh, them mooslims, them suicide freaks ... them's the ones doin' it .. right?
Dream on into the dark night ...
