back to article Orc Assassin Rogue wins Senate seat

Colleen Lachowicz, aka Rogue Orc Assassin Santiaga in World of Warcraft, has won a seat in Maine's State Senate. Lachowiz became one of the weirder stories of the US election when her Republican opponents decided to pick on the fact she's an avid WoW player. Lachowiz's character, Santiaga, has reached the 85th level. Maine's …

    So her priorities will be...

Spend more time playing WoW while being paid by the tax payer.

    Cool.

Well, from the way I see it, gaming is a hobby and has nothing to do with her professional life. As long as she gets her work done, she gets paid. She's free to do whatever she wants with the money, including paying for WoW's monthly fees. And she's definitely free to do what she wants during her off hours.

"Spend more time playing WoW while being paid by the tax payer"

If we could get all our politicians doing that, we might have less bullshit to deal with.

    Meh

    Meh

Being a conservative with an 11 year old Everquest account, I don't see the problem (other than the facts that WoW is Candyland compared to EQ and my EQ Drakkin Shadow Knight could whip that WoW Orc Rogue's ass).

    ;)

Huh... If that character shot is anything to go by, WoW's graphics are in seeeeeerious need of an update. They're rockin' it Quake 2 style there - I've seen more polys on a pirate ship.

Also, is it just me, or is it kind of dumb to have a bristling suit of armor... which has a plunging low-cut neckline? I mean, hey, stab me here! It's vulnerable!

(I know, that territory is well-trodden, but really...)

'dumb' like real life people carrying a bullet proof vest but no helmet ? I mean you are more likely to survive a pneumothorax than a spilled brain.

Yeah, but you're also a hell of a lot more likely to be shot in the chest than in the noggin. In close-quarters combat with (presumably) swords / maces / warhammers / yard sticks, your chances of landing a blow on the head vs. one on the chest are more favorable. Additionally, people with experience in firearms will almost certainly aim for the chest rather than the head, whereas someone with a big fuck-off broadsword is probably not going to waste his time whacking away at the metal bits.

Second, if you're shot sans protection, it doesn't matter where - you're probably not (despite what FPSes would have one believe) going to keep on keepin' on. With body armor you'll be kicked to hell but might be able to scramble up and get the hell outta dodge; even if a helmet stopped a bullet - which would presumably be coming from the sides or behind - I suspect you wouldn't be jumping for joy even if your brain wasn't wrapped around a bullet.

Third, *carrying* a bulletproof vest won't do much good anyway. You'll want to put it on for full effectiveness.

    You go girl... um... ork.

Seriously? Even if she does spend 20hrs a week playing (and that is the average, nothing to do with any individual's time commitment), she is still spending less time than the average state senator spends fapping to gay porn. The electorate apparently knows this.

At least she might have picked up some group- and resource-management skills which will put her ahead of most politicians anywhere in the world.

So I'm going to be that guy.

Why make a point of saying gay porn?

I have to say that I found this highly entertaining.

I had just begun the article and was mentally composing a post along the lines of "I bet that mobilised the gamer vote" and bugger me, she had! The local Republican party must be kicking themselves - way not to understand the cultural changes taking place in your society guys.

The Republicans in Maine are idiots! Why are they criticizing someone for a perfectly legal, non-threatening hobby? Should we criticize them for fishing 4 weeks out of the year? What about hunting? Chasing tail? All I can say is that they got what they deserved, a good solid smack-down by the voters in her district. Congratulations Colleen! :-)

    This could be interesting.

Roll on a few years and the US of A[1] could end up in a similar position to Belgium.

A paralysed government split 50 / 50, Alliance / Horde, with each side voting unanimously against anything suggested by the other.

      Re: This could be interesting.

They've already got to that position! I think the US public do it deliberately, reckoning if there's political gridlock then nobody can pass too many new laws and things can just carry on regardless. (Note, this may not work in "fiscal cliff" situations, but that's what happens when a law actually does sneak through.

The biggest difference being that the average American will complain about it and become bitter where the average Belgian simply does not care that it has happened. At least this will be true until the movement in favor of legalizing pot gets results at the national level, at which point Americans will become much more laid back...
