Google might have lost billions in stock valuation owing to a printer's mistake early on Thursday morning, but CEO Larry Page was in optimistic mood at the company's scheduled quarterly earning call. "We've had a really strong quarter and I'm really happy with our business," he told analysts. "Google's been operating for 14 …

"When Google launched Android, Page said, he'd been warned that the company was "nuts," "

It's hard to imagine where Google would be now if they hadn't entered the smartphone arena. At most, it would be dominated by iOS, and at the very least it would be a hodgepodge of fragmented OS's from a dozen different manufacturers - whilst mobile has drawn faces away from PC screens to the detriment of Google, Android has allowed them to recoup some of that lost revenue before it disappeared into the vast Jobsian Walled Garden....

It's hard to imagine where Google would be now if, when Apple launched the iPhone, Jobs hadn't been so greedy and been forced to deal with the only carrier which would accept his terms - AT&T, the worst of the lot. Just a little more openness at the time and no matter what Google and Android did they could never have caught up. Even one more carrier would have been enough. Apple survived Antennagate etc virtually unscathed - it had the market to lose. Instead, it *forced* its competitors to develop an alternative, which is why we are where we are today, with their sheep fleecing antics still giving them the most revenue (whilst that lasts), yet seeing Android outsell them 4:1 last quarter.

Very American-centric. Apple had no such exclusivity contracts outside of United States, is the market share of iOS vs Android any different?

Google+ monetization does not require you to visit the site (after logging in initially). What Google is interested in are your likes, dislikes and which sites do you go to. It is an incentive to keep you logged into Google so you can be monetized as well as means to get a more fine-grained monetization perspective on your behavior.

Google's current "mobile strategy" seems to be based around laying off all of Motorola's staff and give those jobs to Korean chaebols.

    You can't blame the printers

for the drop, it would have happened if the figures had been released on schedule. The trouble is that there are lots of naive investors (not always small ones) who see a company that's growing exponentially and assume that this will continue forever. When (as is inevitable) they miss a quarter, said naive investors all shout "sell, sell".
