    Why?

    Is this a Microsoft embrace, control, make proprietary strategy? Why would Cisco want to embrace a technology which threatens their IOS control of the network and opens up their networks to open competitors? Is this a legit, run openstack on Linux on a UCS server and then intermix switches from a variety of providers, or is there some catch?

      This is Cisco we are talking about. A lot of their products "support" open standards. In practice however, one always finds the implementation to be hobbled beyond any usefulness and prone to any number of inexplicable errors and hangups. To go back to your Microsoft analogy: Cisco supports open standards like Microsoft once supported Java. Thus, I look forward to watching Cisco's long march toward irrelevance continue.

        Probably right. This allows Cisco to control the OpenStack conversation. People will implement OpenStack on Cisco, it won't work, Cisco will tell them they should have always stayed with their proprietary gear.... I still don't see how Cisco fights this rising tide. VMware is going to be pushing Nicira OpenStack (so much for the close partnership with EMC/VMware and Cisco) at every VMware customer, which basically means everyone, and making a large part of their ROI case that people no longer have to pay 3x the market rate for Cisco switches.
