back to article South Korea on top of the IT world

South Korea has once again been named the world’s most advanced ICT economy according to the latest annual study from the International Telecommunications Union, which had good news for the UK too as it crept up into the top ten. The ITU’s Measuring the Information Society 2012 report is intended to provide a snapshot of …

    South Korea censorship

Have they conveniently forgotten that South Korea is also amongst the developed countries with the most Internet censorship by the government?

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Internet_censorship_in_South_Korea

It's also one of the few countries when you need to put your National ID card number in just to order pizza (or other pizza places) online..

What's so great about fast Internet when sk.gov watches over your shoulder and blocks anything they don't agree with?

I'll take my rural broadband thank you very much.

      I'm so ronery

The only thing they can say about their censorship is, "At least we aren't as bad as North Korea."

I fear uk.gov will be going the same way soon :( with Internet censorship

By the time uk.gov is like that South Korea will require pre-registration of all websites with the government.

"....Have they conveniently forgotten that South Korea is also amongst the developed countries with the most Internet censorship by the government?..."

      I doubt they've "forgotten" that.

They probably just decided that the South Korean government's civil liberties policies had no place in a report which concerned itself with measuring 'ICT economy advancement' —in the same way that they also failed to mention endemic obesity in the USA and the miserable British weather.

Like your comment, they were completely irrelevant to the topic of discussion.

    > and excellent education and literacy

Maybe this is a more important factor for a nation's future than how many mouth-breathers are liking one another's cat photos?

    Smells fishy

I fail to see how countries like The Netherlands, Austria, Spain and Italy, to name but a few, are not on this list and so, presumably, worse than Nigeria etc. Perhaps a few people forgot to send in their forms?

      Netherlands 6th

      Austria 19th

      Spain 28th

      Italy 29th

It is in the linked document.

    Nordic countries...

"Europe dominated the top ten, with eight countries including several Nordic nations and Iceland, while Japan crept in at number eight."

Iceland -is- a Nordic nation. </nitpicking>

Their comms are great, but when I was in country a few years ago, a lot of IT systems are very, very old. Lots of businesses are still using CRTs

    1. pompurin

CRTs are better than LCDs in technical aspects but weight/size and affordability let it down.

Faster response times, superior color gamut, no motion blur, no pixilation, superior contrast.

    Graph does not make sense

What are the grey numbers on the right supposed to represent? I don't think it's what it says (where have all the other numbers gone?).

Me think it is the previous position like the text and the arrow state. :-)

        Re: It would make sense

If the current rank was displayed as well.

This would make it clear that it is not a complete list and would give something to compare.

Re: Graph does not make sense

That's a really good question. Assuming it is a select few of the nations from the big list, the numbers in grey don't match the numbers in the report, as far as I can tell:

      Here's a little copy/paste from page 21 in the report, 5 columns.

      Economy | Rank 2011 | IDI 2011 | Rank 2010 | IDI 2010

      Korea (Rep.) 1 8.56 1 8.45

      Sweden 2 8.34 2 8.21

      Denmark 3 8.29 3 8.01

      Iceland 4 8.17 4 7.96

      Finland 5 8.04 5 7.89

      Netherlands 6 7.82 7 7.60

      Luxembourg 7 7.76 6 7.64

      Japan 8 7.76 8 7.57

      United Kingdom 9 7.75 14 7.35

      Switzerland 10 7.68 9 7.48

    WTF?

Having a bit of a problem here...

...trying to reconcile the following statement :-

"...while Australia remained in 21st position."

    with the sub-heading :-

"UK climbs to fifth as Australia, USA, also take big leaps up league table"

while graph seems to indicate that Australia was in 26th place last year.

    Anyone?
