    Nice advert...

nice advert for iomega storage - they have only been part of EMC for years and have had a SOHO NAS product range for even longer...

one of the 'features' of thier products is built in uselesness... low to midrange devices have the NAS OS on the physical hard drives, not as a ROM image so damage the disks and you are left with a brick...

    How much ....

Can anyone explain why small home/office NAS boxes are so %^*&ing expensive?

The cheapest average about $200/2bay and $400/4bay WITHOUT the drives.

That's a 4channel SATA chip, a network port and an ARM/Atom cpu, a copy of Linux and a cheap plastic box.

For that money I can buy a full Dell PC AND the drives to go in it.

      Re: How much ....

Because you are paying someone else to do it.

In theory you get reliable operation and nice management tools, but in practice you often get a plate of donkey gonads to suck upon.

    FAIL

SOHO punters will pay hard cash for our cheap boxes..........?????

.......not if they have used Iomega devices in the past.

IOMEGA is near the top of my "DON'T BUY" list, along with Lexmark, IBM, Siemens, Belkin and the recently added Dell (because of their dreadful support). Over 45 years experience in the computer industry teaches you quite a lot.

Top of the "DO BUY" list - Samsung (recently added straight on the top).
