    Saving money?

No, its to protect intellectual property from being stolen and pirated.

Not to mention the fact that they are in bed with Microsoft now, and it is probably an order from the US administration to get out. Just in case China is involved in product espionage, but they wouldn't, would they?

If i were a Nokia employee i would have been job hunting ever since they announced the plan to drop Symbian and meego and go fully Windows phone7/8

They must have seen these job cuts coming

    WTF?

'While it’s not in a terrible position, the momentum definitely isn’t with the firm at the moment and it will need to do more than axe a few jobs to turn things around.'

Er, what state does Nokia actually have to get itself into before it qualifies as a 'terrible position' then?!

Flop screwed up there then, for a change

Symbian is popular in China, WP is not.

    But full steam ahead, anyway.

    Still not sacking Stephen Elop?

Nokia won't float with the Microsoft deadweight in tow.

Perhaps El Reg could do a variation of the old SNL Franco gag.

"This breaking news just in! CEO Steven Elop is still valiantly destroying what was formally the world's biggest mobile phone multinational."

Huawei and ZTE and others should hire Elop, he is pushing so much business their way ...

Maybe he can help with the slightly odd product names ... Cool Cheer anyone? ;)

    Somebody give them a clue

People are using Windows on the desktop because it became a de facto standard through various means (like: nobody bothered to target Joe Consumer before). These days, everyone with the cash gets a Mac, not a Windows PC. They didn't have any proper foothold on the mobile market, and people won't give them one. Unless hell freezes over, they'll have to satisfy themselves competing with the likes of Brew, Bada, and whatnot.
