back to article Dell spills its hot cache Fluid, hopes to beat off rivals

Dell recently lifted the lid on its "Hermes" project, named for the speedy chap from Greek mythology, at the Dell Storage Forum. The product, which Dell hopes will smack down EMC’s VFCache, will carry writes between flash caches in a Dell cluster to make sure they all carry the same data. That's a big deal, so project "Hermes" …

What are they going to do to the Rivals? Be careful, they might ask for more...

    Dell stiffening their bottom line

+1 (inch) for the title. The valley would be proud.

    Errr...

    ...what?

"Dell would say that a networked flash box would not be as fast as a coherent server flash cache scheme because it still slows data access through network latency. This will provide Dell with a response to competition from networked all-flash arrays like those from Nimbus, Pure Storage and Violin Memory."

Right - except syncing 'hot' cache contents *between* (slow@ss) Windows servers will be even *slower* than those purpose-built storage boxes with their gazillion 10GbE etc ports (Nimbus offers up to 16 on a single box!), I bet...

That being said this is a good move, commoditizing server-side flash cache, by a major server vendor but execution is literally everything here and it's not just TTM - being Dell if they say 2013 Q1 then it's likely to be 2013 Q2 for mass availability in the channel - but more importantly the effectiveness/scenarios when it makes a big difference... we shall see, I guess.
