back to article 'iPhone 5 case' sparks supplier fondle frenzy

Whispers surrounding Apple's next iPhone show no sign of slowing, with the prospect of a 4in display model gaining traction following video of a supposed iPhone 5 backcover that surfaced on the web this week. The clip – snapped by the guys at eTradeSupply – shows the unibody plate design we've already been introduced to …

I wasn't implying it was being managed as a show, just that the effect was the same.

    And now the facts.

    iPhone 5.

    1) There will be one at some point, as 5 does tend to come after 4.

    2) Er, that's it.

Once you take away the speculation and rumour it's actually not very interesting at all, is it?

Actually, in this case, 4S comes after 4.

Bit slow off the starting blocks there El Reg!

This has been news almost a whole week! Wonder why Apple won't respond to your media requests.

Now where's that picture of a snail... Well, Paris is thinking about it (and is as close to a real snail than anything listed in the icons... boosh!)

At least two week old articles posted so far this week then, following that MSE sell-out one yesterday.

Snail / Spawn of Satan ... similar.

Are you referring to our article from last week where we showed leaked product shots? The link back to that is in this article.

There was a video that materialised shortly after that one, but it wasn't this 'etradesupply' one, which was posted yesterday. Again, there is a link which shows this.

      Re: smaller dock?

Apple really can't win. This new connector is allegedly the universal one the EU has mandated so that any old charger will work with it. If Apple don't switch they're guilty of blocking third party accessories and if they do switch then they're just trying to make you buy new accessories. No win scenario.

        Re: smaller dock?

Hats of to Apple if they do go for a standard micro-USB connector. Surely it would also be within Apple's capabilities to design a low-profile adapter block that attaches to the stereo-jack and USB connectors on the bottom of the new iPhone, and fit it with an Apple connector on the underside? With such an adapter attached you could use your new phone in most, if not all, your old iDock accessories.

Actually, that's probably the very reason for moving the headphone socket to the bottom of the phone.

    Don't feed the trolls....

This is obviously an intentional leak from Apple using a fake part to try and generate some 'hype' and 'buzz' around a product that may or may not be announced at the WWDC. This will have all the fanbois and media drooling when it's nothing more than a deliberate leak

It's even obvious that the guy is employed by Apple FFS there is even an iMac in the background

Speaking of not feeding the trolls

Of course it has to be an Apple employee, no one else in the world has an iMac. Certainly not someone interested enough in Apple related things to blog a video about a possible iPhone 5 leak!

I agree with you halfway though. I think this may be an intentional leak from Apple, but it's 50/50 that it's an intentional leak of a fake iPhone 5 body. Given that prototypes have escaped Apple before the last two releases, you have two choices to avoid having this happening again and letting out your secrets before the big announcement:

      1) make your crazily tight security even tighter, if that's even possible - however, the only way to completely avoid lost/stolen phones is to not let them off campus at all, which means less testing (i.e. greater risk of Antennagate part deux) And no matter how good Apple's security is, once Foxconn builds one they are the weak link in the security chain.

      2) use a decoy strategy, sort of like how ICBMs have decoy warheads to make shooting down the real ones more difficult. First, you'd have test runs of more than one iPhone 5 form factor, so if parts leak from the suppliers you're covered so long as the wrong part leaks or multiple parts leak. You could also "lose" one of the wrong ones or have it accidentally seen by a reporter if you want to muddy the waters in case a real one gets left in the bar again next month.

If the new one is bigger, they can't hide that inside a case making it look like an older model as they'd previously tried to do. But they could hide it in a case that makes it look like an Android phone. Maybe people in Palo Alto bars should be keeping an eye out for Android phones that have iOS' icons on them :)

    Innovations

If this is really one of the parts of the next iteration of iPhone, my mind was blow with an awesome innovation: earphone jack moving from top to bottom...REALLY AWESOME!

    1. uhuznaa

      Re: Innovations

Headphone jack at the bottom, case half an inch taller -- this frees up lots of room at the top of the phone. I would guess Apple will need that room for something. Like a camera with an optical zoom behind a prism.

Everything else just wouldn't make any sense.

    Stop

    Looks more like a testbed

Remember when iPhone4 prototypes were concealed within 3G cases? This is a 4 lookalike so they can test 5 components in the wild without revealing the new case. Expect it to be "lost" in a bar sometime soon.
