back to article Pocket

Read It Later was one of the better Android apps for archiving web content to read at a later date and it has just been given a full makeover, a new name and a welcome price reduction. It'll now cost you absolutely nothing. The principle behind Pocket couldn’t be simpler: if you find something you like on the web just open the …

    Excellent

I've been using this for a little while now and I love it. I've got the Android client, the iOS client, and the Chrome extension so I can save to my Pocket from any of my devices and read from them as well. If you don't have it (or similar app) get it.

One of the main uses for me is actually when I'm catching up on twitter, if someone links to something that looks interesting, then into my Pocket it goes.

    Questionable credentials

Great review however I don't beleive a word of it, I don't trust anyone who uses Windows Vista.

    so....

If there was an article over 5 pages - and you wanted to get the whole thing for reading later. Could this app do it?

      Re: so....

      Instapaper can.

Not sure if there's an Android native app for it though. But for mostly text websites, it's must better than Pocket.

      Yes

It does it for me. Not with every site (it's scrapers are good, but not perfect), but it works a lot of the time.

      Re: so....

I just tested it on a 3 page El Reg article and it pulled all 3 pages happily.

    paywalls

Can it handle paywalls? I get no end of trouble on nature.com articles. Tried Read it Later and the Google weird circle one, neither were good.

      Thumb Up

      Re: paywalls

It certainly has options for handling paywalls, however I don't actually have any accounts with paywalled sites so can't actively test it. But as I say it certainly gives you the option to provide login details for sites that need them.

        Re: paywalls

Tried it, but when I go in the settings and select "manage site subscriptions" it says "feature not currently available for devices with Android 3.0 or greater". Bollocks.

    Don't always need an extension

You can go to http://getpocket.com/add/ and drag the '+ Pocket' button to your bookmarks bar and it will do the same thing

Does it work for streaming porn, um, I mean media content, an, um, friend, yes, friend asked?

Avantgo that I used to have on Palm and Windows Mobile. Sync in the morning and take on the train! Whatever happened to them?
