back to article EMC rounds up rival arrays, beats 'em into submission

EMC VMAX arrays will team up competing drive arrays with a new version of the VMAX Enginuity OS. Much like the existing HDS VSP and NetApp V-Series, Enginuity v5876 will enable VMX to virtualise third-party arrays behind a VMAX head using EMC Symmetrix Federated Tiered Storage (FTS). The VMAX, which is getting a substantial …

The real question is is this VPLEX running on VMAX or something else doing the federation.

If it's VPLEX, great. If not, then it leads to a couple points vs other vendors

It appears to have encapsulation, which makes it more appealing that NetApp's need to reformat the virtualized arrays to WAFL (unless you want all WAFL)

Which then leaves how disruptive it is versus HDS. If it's VPLEX levels or equivalent then its just planned outage on the host side (unless you can spoof WWN). HDS requiring no I/O on the storage ports is pretty disruptive unless you have free ports.

from the look of the architecture i doubt that its a VPLEX engine under here – this doesn’t seem to need any cache coherency or long distance inter site shenanigans so putting in geosynchrony would be a waste. IMO VPLEX is one of the best implemented and least-likley-to-ruin-your-weekend-by-breaking-on-a-friday-afternoon-at-quarter-to-four storage virtualization technologies available. Yet another missed synergy.

Perhaps this is more evidence to suggest that the VMAX teams are still working in splendid isolation from the rest of the company and all its delicious acquired technology.
