back to article Most anticipated videogames of 2012 revealed

With current-gen consoles nearing the end of their lifespans, 2012 has hardly been a golden year for game releases. But that hasn't stopped punters from getting excited at what is to come. Halo 4 US market watcher Nielson has compiled a list of the year's most anticipated games for each console and the results are not what …

    my list

Games I'm looking forward to are Max Payne 3 (obviously) and Diablo 3.

Tomb Raider also looks good, but I'll wait for hands on reviews first because i'm worried it'll turn out to be disappointing.

Does The Last Guardian have any chance of coming out this year (or ever)? Really want to play that.

Also, GTA5 (guess that'll be a 2013 release?) and StarCraft 2 Part 2 (if that ever gets released, I guess Blizzard will be waiting for the hype and cash from Diablo 3 to die down before putting out another game).

We'd have a PC games list for a start.

Really? Given the near-zero number of posts in the PC gaming section of the games forum I look at the most I'd say PC gaming here is - and I'm being generous - a niche activity these days.

Odd then, that World of Warcraft continues (even though it is on the decline) to be the most subscribed to MMO of all time.

PC gaming is far from dead, and good old Valve with Steam has given it a shot in the arm over the last couple of years.

The upgrade cycles are very easy to keep up with these days, because the 360 and PS3 are the standard to which games are held, so there's no pressure to get the latest and greatest. PC gaming right now is not expensive - far from it, the games are far cheaper than their console counterparts.

The games might be, sadly the powerhouse of a PC you need to run them at a decent frame rate, sadly, is 4 or 5 times the cost of a console.

Re: "We'd have a PC games list for a start."

My PC cost about £450, around two and a half years ago. Inexpensive graphics card but room in that budget for RAID.

Plays all the latest games, to an impressive standard. Plus it does lots of things that a console cannot do and many others better. Software is available to make a PC do anything you can imagine and much more.

I can take advantage of things like add-ons, mods and hacks to increase playability of games. When the games haven't been tested properly and I hit a glitch I can open a console prompt and solve the issue rather than have to re-start the game. I can back up my game saves to dropbox. I can go back and discover or re-visit classic titles, usually for next to nothing or free.

When I want it to be better, I can upgrade the graphics card easily and cheaply. Or add more RAM or HDDs. I can connect a huge variety of peripherals.

I do also have a PS3 but mainly as a blu-ray player. Only games I have are those not available on PC. It's worth pointing out that the games themselves cost about 1/3 more on console.

I would have thought that a computer would be fairly essential in a household these days, what with everything being online; so although a console by itself is cheaper I would classify it as more of a luxury item.

"Why bother pirating games when last years titles can be had for £2.50 on Steam?"

You'd be surprised how many people would pirate it anyway.

Sorry but he's right, piracy is a big reason for killing PC gaming. Every lan party I've been too is full of PC gamers who have pirated all their games, swapping them, etc.

No-one in their right mind would spend two years developing a game and expect to get back the cost of salary and time by selling it for just £2.50 a time. The income from developing large PC games has slowly tilted towards being too risky with too low return to bother. You need a successful game with marketing thrust behind it to break profit now, and if you accidentally release a so-so game you go bust.

That's why everyone is developing for consoles now. Even Diablo 3 is not really a PC game anymore. It was delayed to port it to consoles - I am expecting the gameplay to suffer on PC as a result. PC gamers killed PC games.

          1. David Lucke

            PC gamers killed PC games.

Bullshit. Idiotic kneejerk DRM killed PC games. It didn't even slow the pirates down, and made mugs like me who are actually willing to pay money for games hate the experience so much that we just stopped. 5 years ago, I would have reacted in horror to the idea that I would transition to a pure console gamer. Now, I just don't see an option (and no, steam is not a solution, its the most god awful, slow, kludged together piece of crap I've ever tried to use).

            The fuck we did.

Greedy publishers hawking half arsed ports of the same shit console games crippled with the same retarded anti-piracy measures and stuffed with the same adverts for 0 day DLC is what is damaging PC gaming.

In the most egregious cases the pirated version is more functional than the retail. I pirated Crysis 2 after I bought it; the cracked version fixes a game stopping save-game bug that Crytek won't fix as the game is 'out of support'.

Meanwhile folks like Notch and Gabe Newell, who apparently care about the customer, are making money hand over fist....

Funny you should say that. I had to do the same with Far Cry on WinXP x64 a few years back. I'm also of the opinion that DRM and publisher hatred is what tried to kill PC gaming (sorry, but it's not dead). Piracy happened all through the 90s, but the PC was absolutely golden. Then DRM came along, nuked the second hand market completely (meaning fewer games on shelves and no more people willing to pay £40 a pop than previously), and the publishers wrote off all PC gamers as pirates.

But don't be a smug console gamer, because you lot are next. Already the 2nd-hand taxes are being collected, and with the next generation, the publishers will try to kill off the high street entirely, so they can lean you over the coals for £50 a game. And unlike Steam, PSN sales are few and far between, include very few titles, and don't have nearly the same level of discount. So, enjoy that when it hits.

And if I have to hear that "yearly upgrade" FUD one more time... My PC just entered its 7th year of life, and only now am I *thinking* of upgrading it. Next year.

For me, Steam and similar DRM killed PC gaming. I'll still buy titles that don't require it (Gratuitious Space Battles Collectors Edition plus extras, £25 well spent), but I'll be damned if I'm creating an account with anybody to play with a toy. I'm sure it's a drop in the ocean, but there's a not insignificant amount of money I'd have paid out to buy games if they didn't insist on coming with an extra helping of bullshit and malware. Ho hum.

So don't read too much into any part of this list.

And there's no list for Wii U, and that's where most of the action will be for new games on a Nintendo living room console, at least late in the year, so the devs will be winding down their Wii work a bit.

Re: PC Gaming a Niche activity?

Assuming this is in reply to my comment...

It's not about how many hours you or anyone other indifvidual puts into a game. I was referring to PC gaming as part of the overall games market, and I'm sorry to say it, but from what I see the PC is a very small part of that market. It's clearly still viable, but it is a niche these days. Call it "enthusiast" if you don't like the word niche.

The forum I mentioned earlier gets more comments in a single Linux chitchat thread than the entire PC games forum...

This is, by the way, coming from someone who spent a fair chunk of last weekend playing Wing Commander: Darkest Dawn. I _like_ playing games on the PC.

Re: PC Gaming a Niche activity?

Of course, my anecdotal evidence has as much/little validity as anyone else's.

I may be being overly pessimistic, and I'd love it if I'm wrong, but from what I see PC gaming just isn't anywhere near mainstream any more. A bit more worthless anecdotal evidence for you - In my immediate circle of friends/family/colleagues there are a lot of geek types. There are loads of consoles there - probably evenly split between PS3/360/Wii with the odd PSP and DS thrown in too. Including myself there are two of us that game on the PC.

In the interests of clarity the forum I'm talking about is digital spy - not a specialist gaming forum, but one that has a dedicated gaming section and also has a very wide range of users, everyone from proper hardcore geeks to the most computer-illiterate I've ever come across. It's as good a representation of the mainstream as anywhere else I regularly visit.

I'm emphatically _not_saying PC gaming is dead or dying, just that it's a niche (or specialist, if you prefer....) part of the overall games market. That said, to be fair on a geek oriented site like the Reg I'd expect some mention of it in this kind of article.

....then I must be the grim reaper. Plenty of fun to be had in PC gaming, it's just not marketed as hard as console games. The best racing, flight and FPS games are all to be found on PC's, most of them PC exclusives because consoles can't handle them.

    Depressed ...

    <RANT>

This thread is so depressing. I dislike consoles with a passion, dumbed down gaming and locked in technology for kids. Being 48 years old I've seen gaming evolve from the first Space Invaders machine that I used in a motorway service station in the mid 70s to Pong at home through microcomputers (I wrote for the Spectrum) and into the glory days of full on PC gaming when every year had a new GPU and the bar was constantly being raised. Consoles are the antithesis of all that has been achieved and limit the imagination of developers and the evolution of gaming. Even more so the trend for phone gaming. It MP3 versus SACD/DVD-A all over again: quantity and convenience not quality (not universally true but near enough). Or to put it another way we're into the era of Hollywood CGI laden blockbusters for 12 year old boys (eg Transformers) and the era of 2001-A Space Odyssey and Apocalypse Now are but a distant memory. Or another way: Goodbye Beatles and Pink Floyd, hello X-Factor.

      Re: Depressed ...

Actually consoles are at a stage that you can have a full blown game on them successfully.

Our console is more powerful than the PC is some respects despite the PC being reasonably new and a quad core.

With the modern ones a developer doesn't have to write for lots of different hardware but can optimise for one or two platforms.

There are lots of console games I think you would enjoy.

Phone games leave me cold, not interested, mobile gaming - prefer a hand held console buttons again.

So what would I recommend for a non console gamer to try?

Well Little Big Planet is unique in the console world, read up on it then say there is no imagination.

Uncharted 2 - a big action adventure game, well written and performed. possibly the showcase console game of recent years.

Even console games ported to PC can be bad. Batman Arkham City is one of those.

The GTA series however has always been excellently ported from Playstation to PC.

As for my most anticipated games for PC, I guess GTA5, Fallout 4, and HalfLife3 (or at least Episode 3) would be mine. That and any other game that has an extensive world to explore and some interesting challenges to solve that don't require me to have 4 prehensile thumbs in a particular position whilst standing on my schlong in a bath of green custard,.... just to get past that particular section. Having to "master" a particular key combination is BORING!! Been there done that,....... games designers, please find something new.

      Re: FPS controllers

Lack of fine control is why I play Killzone 3 rather well and often top the scores for my team.

I struggled like hell with KZ2 and the Dual Shock, tried Move with the demo of KZ3 and never looked back.

As I have used KBM as well, Move is very close in performance and definately more fun

        Re: FPS controllers

I second that. Control pads worked really well when I played the Super Mario Bros trilogy on the NES.

In almost all types of game except for platformers, a gamepad is a poor kludge - for FPS it is either impossible or the auto-aiming takes any and all skill out of it. For driving it is also next to useless.

I can honestly say the only recent game that I felt worked well on a gamepad (after a bit of getting used to it) was Red Dead Redemption.

Xcom: Enemy Unknown - looks seriously brilliant (for the PC), but that's pretty much it.

Got (and loved) Skyrim, Mass Effect and playing the brilliant (now Free To Play) Star trek Online (if you haven't checked it out and love Star trek it's fecking awesome and FREE)...

Played Max Payne 1 & 2 and watched the awful movie - probably not gonna bother with 3 unless it gets rave reviews for the right reasons (IE is more like an updated version of the first one with maybe intelligent enemies).

    Consoles are for girls

    PC games are for men.

Do you care? It's a long time since the Aliens franchise made something new that wasn't shit/meh, TBH.

Diablo 3, without any doubt. Also XCOM and GTA, and MMO Planet Cyrene.

Guildwars 2 is an un-pirateable, groundbreaking MMO with no subscription for the PC.

    Sonic 4 Episode 2

    And the DLC for Keflings.

I want to look forward to Fable : The Journey, but since Fable 3 is still full of bugs with dodgy achievements, Lionhead can suck my balls. Literally. They can place my balls in their mouth and suck them.

Tomb Raider, and if Final Fantasy Versus 13 ever gets released then that too.

    Flight Sims

I don't get hung up about it. I mostly play Eagle Dynamics' DCS flight simulations these days. A full A10C 3D cockpit with every button and switch controllable combined with a decent stick, throttle and IR tracker vs Tom Clancys HAWX on the playstation. It takes hours to learn how to fly a full pc sim to get the most out of it, whilst you can pick up the likes of HAWX and immediately start blasting away. Both games have their merits and appeal to different people.

If console games happen to get released on a PC for £2.50 (Portal 2 and Lara Croft Guardian of light spring to mind), then I'll have a go, and usually enjoy it; I even bought an Xbox 360 controller for the likes of GTA4. If a "triple-a" much hyped game is console exclusive, then meh...

Console and PC are marketing different games to different people with a little bit of crossover. It's just that console games are better advertised in the mass media whilst PC games tend to be marketed through enthusiasts' word of mouth.

black helicopters for Black Sharks on the PC....

      Crossover

      There is plenty of crossover.

I am of to play Half Life on the PC, earlier I played Killzone PS3, a boy is on Team Fortress 2 at the moment - was on a DS earlier.

I am fed up of this pretend was between console and PC owners, they are all gamers aren't they.

Do console owners get nasty to PC gamers? No, so why do they get nasty to console gamers?

Only thing I can think of is jealousy.

I will admit I like consoles, because I use a PC all day at work and PC gaming is a LITTLE like sitting at work.

    Yaaaaaaaaaaaawn.

Take out the sequels and spinoffs, and how many games are left on any of those lists?

Honestly, it's like watching BBC - repeat after boring repeat with the occasional, once in a blue moon gem. Jeff Minter got it right - the "men in suits" have brought what was once a wellspring of unbridled creativity to its knees and squeezed it until only the bland was left.

Here' a tip - instead of wasting your money on [Insert AAA title] [Insert number], get onto XBLIG, PSN's Indie games or Indie City and get a few indie titles for the same money.

Support originality - support indie games!

    Madden?

Seriously, when will people stop buying DLC packaged as "new games"? FIFA 12! FIFA 13! MADDEN 12! MADDEN 13! WITH NEW PLAYER SWAPS!

Miffed that BioShock Infinite is so low on both lists. At least Resident Evil 6 seems to be up there in the top spots.

      Re: Madden?

What is Madden anyway - never seen it in a shop.

As to shooter games - they are fun, but then I have never played a Call of Duty game, perhaps that is why I don't think they are all the same.

First one I played was Wolf 3D.

They may be shoot enemies, move on but some allow cover, some allow stealth, some have good stories, some have fantastic weapons, some have great vehicles.

What if funny is the similarity between of all games, Half Life 2 and Resistance 3, Mine level, Boat level, Prison level, mad weapons.
