      It runs past the end of our road but isn't stopping. In fact there's nothing between Townsville and Cairns. This is a major cyclone area and some decent communications after a big one would be more than handy.

    It's all John Howard's fault.

    He should never have sold Telstra. National infrastructure should remain under govt control because national infrastructure is of national importance. The result of selling Telstra was that the govt no longer has any rights to the hardware, hence the massively expensive price of buying back access to what the govt used to own. If John Howard had not sold Telstra, the govt could have easily rolled out an NBN a couple of years ago for about 3bn (a fraction of the cost).

    p.s. these days govt is a four letter word.

    It is a 4 year plan

    The government has spun this as a three year plan, when in fact it is a 4 year plan. Many of the sites have a start date of June 2015. By starting NBNCo mean we will start the detailed planning in June 2015 and that on average it will be another 12 months until the service is available.

    The roll-out is 14 months behind schedule and customers are simply not connecting. The highest take-up rate in the nation is 29%. Based on page 77 of the NBNCo Corporate Plan, they were expecting take-up to be 43% rising to 70%.

    About the only thing not to go wrong yet is the budget.

    "The Prime Minister, Julia Gillard, announced today that the fibre-optic network delivering high speed internet would be connected, OR IN THE PROCESS OF BEING CONNECTED in the next three years, to:

    1 million premises in NSW

    700,000 premises in Victoria

    430,000 premises in Western Australia

    330,000 premises in South Australia

    65,000 premises in the Northern Territory

    200,000 premises in Tasmania

    678,000 premises in Queensland

    135,300 in the ACT"

    Please read the fine print.

    For the above to be true, they only need to start laying cables.

    The don't need to actually connect anyone.
