back to article HD glitch for Apple TV punters

HBO isn't giving up its box seat for anybody – not even Apple. The premium cable channel, which won a global reputation by investing in quality shows for intelligent grown-ups, including The Wire and The Sopranos, is also a distribution channel for other people's stuff – that's how it made its revenue before diversifying into …

    Is it just me...

...or is this story as clear as mud?

Does this mean that if I buy a film on iTunes it won't be delivered to me at all? Is this only true if I am an HBO customer? Is this only a problem if I have downloaded it before, but have lost the local copy and want to download it again?

    Any ideas?

      Re: Is it just me...

This is just a problem with re-downloads, a bit like music was working before the recent iCloud changes.

In essence once you download a movie to iTunes from one of these companies you can't re-download it again, e.g. to an Apple TV.

Of course you can keep watching your existing iTunes copy anywhere and whenever you want as long as you have access to it., via Home Sharing for example. If you lose your local copy you're stuffed (for now at least)

The main issue seems to be that re-downloads will now be at 1080p and not 720p as before, so I guess the studios want more money...

I agree, Andrew, was this meant to go up or were you going to edit it first? It doesnt have the same level of quality as your usual work...

Well with German Sky the competition is simple

German Sky has nothing (except for sports) exclusive. They don't produce a second of intelligent TV. All they do is broadcast a random selection of random stuff, and sports.

I think you're confusing "Sky" with "The Media Industry".

    No, me too.

Don't get what 'the old dinosaurs are proving much better' at.

AppleTV's content is carried over the internet so don't understand what's being 'passed by'. iChoons, y'apps n iMovees wouldn't be without the 'net.

And me, what is this article going on about? all these platforms use the internet as transit.

You can't think of anything that can challenge HBO?

    Torrents?

The Apple TV doesn't output 1080? only 720?? It can playback 1080 content however but only downscaled to 720 - this story is as clear as mud to me?!

The new one does 1080p — at last! — which presumably is why this issue has just now come to light.

Oh no, not the Copyright Industry at it yet again!

This is the second of two copyright stories in one day where, as usual, the Copyright Industry is behaving in its typical deplorable manner.

Sooner or later this industry is going to cop a three-torpedo broadside that it'll be lucky to limp home from.

For many, 'fire one'; 'fire two'; 'fire three' can't come soon enough.

    Apple's next move

might be to spend some of that Cash mountain they have and buy a couple of Film Studios.

Suddenly all the arguments about not showing other studios output might well be moot.

They wouldn't dare lose an outlet as big as Apple's for their product.

      Re: Apple's next move

No, keep and add to the cash mountain, currently IIRC it's about $100bn against market valuation of $500bn - I'm waiting until they've got so much money in the bank that they get taken over with the loan for the takeover being paid off the next day from the cash in the bank. On that day, I'll LOL.

"But these old dinosaurs are proving much better at giving punters on-demand stuff they want at a decent price."

That doesn't really follow from the facts you presented. From the facts you presented, the more logical conclusion would be that these "old dinosaurs" are much better at getting and holding on to exclusivity agreements -- usually at the expense of the "decent price" component.

Article makes sense. Sure, more stuff is coming via the internet, but it's still a small percentage, and old media are still the gatekeepers whatever the platform.

Are we scratching YouTube off the "might replace TV" list?

Does netflix threaten pay-tv subscriptions, or just bankrupting blockbuster?

I think the last proper push at unseating normal telly was Joost, which I think they eventually closed.

...that would seriously inconvenience a Sky subscriber. Can you?

I'm not clear on the question, but if you're asking "Is there a web service which would make a Sky customer give up their subscription?" - then yes: I cancelled mine, and switched to Netflix. Far, far cheaper, and "stuff" I'm interested in, on demand.

Re: ...that would seriously inconvenience a Sky subscriber. Can you?

I had hoped to do this with Netflix, I was very excited about the prospect of ditching sky. However (and everyones viewing is different) for me Netflix is nowhere near a replacement for subscription tv. No current tv series, no current movies, no sport. Great if you are happy with lesser and slightly older moveis and great if you don't want to watch the current series of anything and aren't interested in sport.....

Netflix has a long way to go, I personally hope they get there because while running the trial I have been very impressed with the quality of the streams and the service in general, unfortunately, as they say, content is king.
