Reg Hardware Mobile Week A Samsung staffer has confirmed that the Galaxy S III smartphone will be out next month, as past rumours and the handset's officially recognised absence from this week's Mobile World Congress (MWC) have suggested. What's starting to worry me...

...is that Android's days are numbered.

iOS rules phones and tablets. Apple is eating into Microsoft's turf on the desktop. With iCloud their apps are starting to sync between the three.

The Windows 8 launch is making it clear that Microsoft is putting up a pretty good fight - SkyDrive provides sync, Metro and WP development is converging, and the desktop has huge (and existing) enterprise support.

Android is king of smartphones. There's no sync cohesive framework other than through individual apps - which makes sync fragmented, much like the OS is fragmented. Google, as has been mentioned by others (including some at Google), is good at building apps - at the expense of building out a platform. And a platform is, IMO, what's required to win in this game.

Android tablets have little traction. Chrome as an OS has even less traction. Enterprise support for smartphone, tablet and desktop is minimal.

    Not a horse I'd back...

Yes - though they had such tiny market share to begin with this isn't hard. However, MacBooks are becoming very common these days; just visit your local StarBucks. Mac can only realistically aim at becoming a significant minority share, but even that would be a huge gain.

Indeed. A friend of mine bought a Mac Book Pro thingy, it actually turned out to be the cheapest way to get the hardware spec he wanted. How times have changed eh?!

He then installed Win 7 on it.

I've dared him to take it to the genius bar if it develops a problem.

Actually, the dominant laptop is hp, i base this on that its the only brand of laptop/desktop that i could see over a houndred ppl using when i was at work on friday.

Furthermore, based on a survey i did once, consisting of one bloke, 100% of people have never even heard of apple macs :)

Needless to say, people that sit in Starbucks to "work" (read: show off how important they are) are not a very good representation of the global technology market.

      Interesting take.

iPhones/iPads are essentially fashion accessories and as such will be here today gone tomorrow must haves. While they appeal to the cool kids today they'll go the same way as shoulder pads and flairs when the winds of fashion change.

But looks like I will have to invest in a large number of chargers.

Battery expectancy of 12 mins between charges.

Hey... I've seen Android in the store!!!

I haven't seen it anywhere else... well that's not true, I have a friend who uses android since it's easier to pirate software on than iOS.

What bothers me is that there's no companies making AN Android phone. It seems like they make 100 Android phones and you have to just pray that the one you buy will be upgradeable.

Of course, then you have Nokia.... they could have made one or two awesome Windows phones and made them kick ass. But it seems like they're trying to set a new record of how many phones they can release in a 6 month period. But at least all 100000 models are named Lumia so we can be really confused :)

    But...

Will the damn thing have a notification light?

I honestly can't believe the S2 doesn't have one. I stood there gob-smacked when shown it by a work mate. Seriously, you have to turn the damn screen on every time you have walked away from your desk, just to see if you've missed anything.

    Daftest thing I've ever seen.

Glad there are 101 other 'droids with lights for me to chose from.

Anything to save the battery on this one. Quadcore, how big will the battery have to be?

        Re: But...

More cores are used to reduce power consumption by switching most of the cores off at idle, but still having the extra grunt when needed - the "anything more powerful must use more battery" mindset is 1990's thinking...

My dual core SGS2 lasts longer than my single core SGS1 did.

    Curved screen

Adding a curved screen looks like a very clever way of increasing the rigidity of phone significantly (at least in the major axis). This is going to increasingly be an issue as phones get ever thinner. Most blokes like to carry their mobe in a back pocket and this imposes a significant strain on the casing as you bend over or worse still squat down.

Do they? I've never met a single person who keeps their phone in their back pocket. I honestly can't think of a quicker way to get it stolen or snapped in half...

Curved screens are a nice idea though.

i think it will have more than that

as samsung is sponsoring the Olympics and as the rumours suggest the olympians will use nfc to pay for everything and may be used as security passes (a wise and fantastic advertising opportunity for both samsung and nfc within the uk) then surely the s3 would contain such a facility as well as a few key selling features that highlight the olympics???

    in fact it will.........

Do you seriously believe that will ever work?

It might for 5 minutes, but then it's back to good old paper when it all goes titsup.

Samsung might do well to stay out of that mess, it could actually turn out to be very bad publicity.

So Samsung want me to bend my neck to view this gimmick tech? I'll let that pass as it probably will be littered with the gimmick OS.

If anyone can name me one reason why a flexible OLED will be useful on a phone, I'll eat my hat. Seriously, I'll keep drinking my beer and keep using my useful iPhone.

Moooooooooooo. I think the penguin has got mistaken for a cow.
