A Taiwanese gamer sat dead in a chair at an Internet cafe for up to nine hours before fellow players noticed the poor guy had popped his clogs. Chen Rong-yu, 23, was discovered lifeless by his computer on Thursday night, his rigid hands stretched towards the keyboard and mouse, Sky News reports. The unfortunate gamer had been …

    How insensitive!

How insensitive to the living-impaired community! Dead is a hate word - they prefer "living impaired", or "alternately metabolizing", or "differently entropicly enabled".

23 years old and he couldn't just go for a jog. And all of his buddies didn't notice? Was this a WOW gold farming operation? I had days in high school when I would play games with my friends, but we were never so engrossed in our games that we wouldn't notice that someone DIED.

      Hard to prove...

if you did, you wouldnt know.

unless of course someone did die and you did notice, in which case apologies and deepest sympathies

A dreadful thing to happen, and the relatives must feel they are in a very bleak place at the moment - but I am afraid that your sub-heading (Stiff competition) caused tears of laughter to roll down my face. Naughty step for whoever wrote it, but take a tub of ice-cream (or crate of beer) with you.

the fellow gamers didn't notice him, the waitress did. Any way, I had an idea that I did post somewhere else, here it is plus a bit of an enchantment.

How about making a pedaling device and leaving it under the table. The gamer will have to pedal for few minutes every hour otherwise his screen brightness will lower until the screen becomes too dark for any kind of work. The gamer won't have to leave his/her chair, they just need to pedal for a bit to get their legs moving.

The basic rule of the device is: it works in reverse of how the screensaver works. While the screensaver will kick-in if you don't touch the mouse or keyboard for certain period. This device will kick-in if you do _not_ _stop_ using the keyboard or mouse for after a certain period and for a given period (5 minutes every hour?). If you don't want to screen to dim and you don't want to stop playing.... then start pedaling.

The idea can be implemented by software alone, but in that case the gamer will have to leave the game for 5 minutes every hour (can't touch the keyboard or mouse during that time).

How about the above, will it actual help gamers a bit? I know that it would be better if the gamer stood-up and walked, but this could be the next best thing!

      Neat idea!

Apply to an awful lot of office/IT jobs too, methinks. Remember when I was 'desk-bound' for hours (time just flies) and stood up to go to the toilet, sometimes it was just damn difficult to walk for several seconds.

@AC. Not a very original idea.

They used to chain slaves to the large oars which propelled the galleys of olden days. When the oar stopped moving, the chief whipper figured the slave was dead, tossed his body overboard and chained a new slave to the oar.

There is prior art here and your idea merely knocks it off.
