Telstra can't even manage their primary purpose - setting up a phoneline - without screwing something up, overcharging, getting it wrong, or just not bothering to actually DO it; so I am not surprised security isn't high on their priority.
Selling your details to 3rd parties IS high on their priorities, as the record for spam-calls on a new Telstra line is less than two hours (according to whirlpool) with full knowledge of your personal details, including birthdate! It is strongly suspected that the Telstra sales division is either full of moles on-selling data, or their security has been wide open for a number of years now.
Suffice to say I am NOT with Telstra - except when you want a new line and you HAVE to be... :-(
