A California teacher has been suspended while authorities investigate claims she ran a series of porn websites from a school computer in partnership with a local retired cop. Heidi Kaeslin, 35, has had her school-issued Mac confiscated by the Lincoln Unified School District, the Stockton Record explains. Officials are …

Did she show the sites to the kids?

Did the kids work on the sites?

    Were the kids product testers?

Did the kids even know before this story broke?

    No?

Ok then, using a school computer for "outside" projects. Slap on the wrist, nawty-nawty, don't do it again. Next!

There again, what do you expect from a nation that considers pizza a vegetable? (Given the sugar levels, it would be better classed as dessert!)

    1. Arctic fox

Unfortunately the kids not being in any way involved (I assume that - the cops would......

........be going berserk if they had been) will not stop the moralists from using the "what about the children?" argument. Funny is it not, how unscrupulous the "good" are when it suits their convenience?

        Funny...

Those same tools that whine oh...What about the children are probably the same ones who went to the site to 'Verify' its contents on their family computer. Let's hope Little Johnny & Jenny don't know how to look through browsing history.

Teacher didn't show pr0n to kids. Slap on the wrist for doing something stupid on a work machine. So how bout that football game?

What is it with commentors on the reg thinking that every decision in a case that involves smut is some sort of knee jerk moral issue to do with the smut?

      1. The BigYin

        @AC at 12:47

Would depend exactly on the terms of employment but yes, dismissal could be on the cards. The story does not state if she was using the laptop at home or in school. I presumed she was doing this "after hours" from her home, but using a school resource to do so.

"What is it with [commentators] on the reg thinking that every decision in a case that involves smut is some sort of knee jerk moral issue to do with the smut?"

Because is usually is? Especially in the increasingly puritanical USA (to be fair, the UK isn't much better but at least we don't teach the Creationism fable in school).

"You wouldn't do it for Indians, Pakistanis, etc, don't do it to Americans."

If the Indians or Pakistanis were so mentally deficient and money-grubbing as to classify paratha or something as a vegetable, I would.

I wouldn't really call it using school resources... Sure, the school bought the laptop, but "using resources" implies that something is consumed or lost in the process. Instead of the laptop sitting turned off in its case, it was being used to design web sites. No problem in my book.

Instead of "using resources" I'd say utilizing excess capacity.

I thought that it was pretty clear that the site was being run "from her home" - so no miss-use of school bandwidth, and who cares what the computer is used for outside of working hours? Would it have been better if she was using it for destructive things like gambling, or online shopping for more shoes than her credit card can cope with?

      3. PatientOne

        @AC 12:47

She was given a laptop, so presumably she took it home to work there.

They fear she used the laptop (presumably at home) to help set up and run this business. That is why they are checking it to see what she had been up to.

So she was not using the school's bandwidth, just (potentially) using the laptop.

Would you really fire someone who might have used a laptop you gave them to run a business from their home?

Lobbyists distorting reality in America (and in other countries)

The back story as to why a pizza's is legally classed as a vegetable is because of the manipulating lobbying in America has got so badly corrupted, that we are now at the insane point were they are blatantly manipulating reality around what the corporations want, i.e.

"pizza's status as a vegetable and limited how often French fries could be served, stemmed from a 2010 child nutrition law calling on schools to improve the nutritional quality of lunches served to almost 32 million U.S. school children."

So by lobbying pizza == vegetable, then allows them to continue to dump their crap food on 32 million of their children! How is that for an example of profoundly Narcissistic thinking from the corporation leaders to behave like this.

Meanwhile, in this story, we have another lot of lobbyists again distorting reality, in that they freak out if any teacher shows they have a sex life. In the heads of the lobbyists (and the people who pay them) teachers are not allowed to show an interest in sex. That's basically the same sexually twisted chastity style thinking and lobbying that has been used by catholic church leaders for centuries and look what a shocking number of these “sexual lobbyists” have shown themselves up to be really like. (Hint, its at a minimum showing a Borderline pattern of personality disorder and in some cases even more serious).

It shows how badly manipulated American culture has become. (Also both Borderline and Narcissistic are both Cluster B personality disorders (as is Histrionic, as in a desperate need for attention) and look at how much attention all this lobbying gets. Its all part of the power games been played for centuries by Cluster B personality disorders to manipulate everyone else. They are endless manipulators of others).

Disclaimer: To the American's who must blindly defend anything said to question the way American leaders run things; we can also say other countries do indeed also manipulate their people as well, but that just distracts you (and others) from thinking about and sorting out the problems in your own country. Use these stories as an example of where things are not just going wrong but are being manipulated wrong and so it highlights where problems need to be fixed. Also if you are still in denial, then your continued denial is highlighting you as part of the problem.

Oh and while we are on the subject of lobbying to manipulate how people think, any American who still refuses to believe what I've said can keep repeating to themselves "I live in the land of the free" to keep fooling themselves, whilst watching the recent video of blatantly authoritarian police brutality of students being blasted in the faces with pepper spray for peacefully expressing their support against the unending Narcissistic corporate greed in America. The exact same Narcissism leading their society that has allowed lobbyists to try to manipulate pizza's into being thought of as a vegetable to dump crap food on 32 million children. The point is, even the phrase "land of the free" is part of the manipulation to keep reminding everyone they are free when really they are not. Its all manipulation.

Every country has to clean house to prevent the distortion of reality continuing and the manipulating lobbyists are some of the most high profile targets than need to be taken down. Once we all stop their manipulation then we can all work to get at the one's behind the lobbyists who pay them, who will be weakened by the lobbyists being silenced by being exposed for what they are.

Whilst the photography club at my school made do with prefects and 6th formers 'posing' for them they were seriously jealous of a rival school's club who had two teachers on their list.

Amazing how useful a large darkroom/studio is when you need a legit reason to keep people out for a while.

          Teacher standards

You mock the intelligence of teachers and presumably that's why you're being down-voted, but I think you come close to making a good point and then miss it entirely - Teacher standards are slipping because teaching has become a job that nobody wants to do. If I didn't understand why before then I certainly do now that I catch a bus full of high school kids to work everyday.

    Re: teachers like that

When I was a teenager at secondary school I was a very keen photographer.

During one lesson when our teacher was off we were all told to get on with some thing quietly by a relief teacher. I started going through a review on a new B/W emulsion in AP, several other pupils were reading ratherless high brow mags, when suddenly the teacher realised what I was reading, shot up and confiscated it, telling I could collect it back at the end of the day.

When I got the mag back at the end of the day I thumbed through only to find a beautiful series of pictures of lady wearing only a butterfly, delicately posed on one of her nipples. The model bore a striking resemblance to the supply teacher.

Re: Why there were no teachers like her when you were at school

"In those days, the job carried some dignity and was a position of authority. That's all been stripped away now."

That is a part of the current controversy, for sure, and it is the case that class room discipline does have a tendency to break down where professional boundaries are eroded. This is one of the more obvious forms of such erosion, all of which add to a classroom culture where pupils feel free to be aggressive, demanding [...], you name it. A climate of anything goes, and all because there is a tendency of teachers to behave like someone else in the playground. It is interesting to see in the US reports that pupils at the school spoke negatively about what she'd done.

All professions have a set of ethics; it is probably written into both the appropriate professional ethics and contract of employment that this individual would not bring the profession, school and self into disrepute by means of behaviour that is incompatible with the professional role. Certainly when teachers represent themselves as sexual objects they are changing the nature of their professional status and relationship with the client group.

Some people have responded with the predictable 'phwoah' class of responses, which detracts from the claims of another group of people in society; those who, as young boys, were sexually abused by women. The classic feminist response tends, sadly, to be along the lines of 'they enjoy it'. You'll notice this is the classic male paedophile claim about the children they have abused; in fact it is the classic response of any paedophile and any fellow traveller, conscious or not of the proximity of their position to that of the paedophile.

I'm not suggesting the woman is a paedophile, or even an ehebophile, but the woman has been sailing very close to the wind, and her business interests stand in direct conflict with her professional ones. Had she continued unhampered I'd not be surprised to have read that she would have undergone a sexual relationship with one of her pupils.

    1. BrownishMonstr

Though I do agree with you, I feel that in the UK some rules take powers away from teachers that would otherwise give them more power to control the class. I'd come up with an argument, but I'm not quite sure where I stand. On one hand, some teachers have the ability to abuse children so you don't want them to have any power, but then on the other hand there are teachers who are friendly and you want to remain in contact with because they're like friends/colleagues.
