back to article NetApp's £1m challenge won by precisely no one

Nobody won a million pounds of kit from NetApp because data centre nerds thought the offer was unbelievable or couldn't be bothered with the paperwork. NetApp UK offered an award of up to £1m in NetApp hardware, software, and services to a lucky customer that managed to reduce its storage usage by 50 per cent through using …

    Or maybe...

    > A NetApp spokesperson said: "The response rates were really low. We realised that perhaps people who enter competitions have very little tolerance for entry forms and also a lot of people thought it was too good to be true."

Or maybe the reason is that it is simply not possible to reduce storage requirements by 50% using Netapp gear?

      Joke

      Oh it's easy

If you want to reduce your usage of storage by 50% just by using Netapp gear you just need to do the following:

      1) Plan on buying 2 X netapp appliances

      2) Change order to just 1

      3) Jump for joy as you have reduced your usage of storage by 50% just thru use of Netapp appliances.

How else could the company conclude so far that they recieved a handful of responses from current customers. Competition form too complicated - no, impossible to reduce usage 50% - HA no, can't be that, People think it's april the first and are stupid - yes that must be why nobody won!

      As well as...

It looks like one would have to actually guy buy netapp gear to try and reduce your req's by 50%. Talk about a bait and switch! Give it to marketing to try and trick folks to buying into vendor lockin on a low end array...

    In the old day's

Back in the old day's your sales rep would fill in these competition forms out for you. How sales staff have vhanged over the years.

    FAIL

    Or, alternatively ...

    They said:

The kit, software and services is unclaimed because potential customers thought the offer was just not believable.

    Translation:

We can't even give the stuff away :(

    FAIL

Sounds a bit reversed. You'd expect NetApp to offer money back if you can't save storage, not if you can

    WTF?

    Lack of incentive.

So you reduce your storage requirements by 50% using NetApp kit.

And the prize is a million quid's worth of NetApp kit, to go with the 50% of what you've already got that you no longer need.

    What were they thinking? eBay?

1.) The $1 Million paranormal challenge - reward for anyone who proves under proper conditions evidence of any paranormal, occult or supernatural power.

    Unclaimed.

2.) The $1 Million bigfoot reward – Reward for anyone who can provide a photograph that leads to the capture of bigfoot, the lochness monster or the abominable snowman.

    Unclaimed.

3.) The £1 Million Netapp reward – reward for anyone who can save storage usage by 50% using Netapp gear.

    Unclaimed.

I think I’ll go for bigfoot reward, seems the most achievable as I have three to choose from and only need to take a photo.

I guess if you did achieve the Netapp claim you could technically apply for the prize of number 1.

Maybe the hoops you need to jump through...

Were you needed to use 2 Million quid of netapp stuff to begin with, save 1 million, and have a million left over. You MIGHT win the prize (or not?).
