    Ah, more assistance for the underprivileged

    Starved of bandwidth and choice in the past, brave denizens of "London" can now look skyward and rejoice for their hour of internet salvation is at hand.

    Fuck the Capital, surely a better test would be if it can server 4G through "hills" and "fields" that the rest of the country has in abundance which is the networks usual excuse for not providing a broadband pipe.

      UK 3G/UMTS uses CDMA tech already (W-CDMA).

      LTE is an evolution ("Long Term Evolution") of the existing architecture.

      LTE phones will drop down to 3G signals where LTE is unavailable, and potentially GSM beyond that. So it's already designed in.

      Check out the 3GPP LTE/IMS specs elsewhere, they're a thrilling read.

      HSPA+ is already 'combat proven' to a fair degree by many operators; the idea of a trial network is to try out new stuff and see if it breaks. Vodafone are keen to push HSPA+ as their main tool for mobile broadband, presumably O2 want to try out something 'better'.

    I'd settle for meaningful 3G please. Although I guess living in the hills of Yorkshire and not the ghettos of London the chances are slim.

      But I guess living near Clapham Junction rather than Oxford Street, the chances are just as slim.

    Battery life of a smartphone running LTE

    Probably about 2 minutes, the 3G ones barely last a day if you use them.

    Former owner of a Desire S now using my Nokia 6700 Classic again until something worthwhile comes along.

    3g indeed

    Definitely would have been nice for them to do SOME work on their 3g network first. In Chester (I believe considered a tiny outback hamlet where one should not expect a signal) 3G sometimes works, but when it does, it appears the mobile phone kit backhauls to o2's internet backbone via 2400 baud modem.

    No 3G for the vast majority of the length of the m6, and where I work it appears to flick on and off randomly - dropping most if not all calls at some point during the conversation.

    I got better 3G signal in the middle of nowhere in third world asian backwaters than I did at home in a commuter town 30mins from London KX.
