Apple has reportedly filed a complaint against a porn-purveying website that has glommed onto a gaggle of iPhone-related domain names that redirect unwary users to their hardcore smut service. According to Domain Name Wire, the complaint was filed with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) against the alleged …

      WTF?

      What?

What is this great firewall of apple of which you speak?

I'm pretty sure there are no restrictions on access to the web from iDevices...

    Can't be true

I'm sure Apple insisted the other day that only Android phones had porn.

Did they say that? As if that was a feature on their end and not a lack thereof?

    Hmm...

I only see three of the seven that anyone would be in danger of mistaking for anything but a porn site. Surely URL infringement requires more than simply having the name of a product in the URL. Am I wrong? I'm not too familiar with the WIPO rules.

    Oh yeah!
Interestingly, all seven of the allegedly infringing domain names – including the one that's arguably the most directly infringing, iphone4s.com – were registered in August 2008. As Domain Name Wire rightly points out, whoever is behind freenaughty4mobile.com displays a savvy understanding of iPhone naming conventions.
I love the implication that it's someone inside Apple Inc. registering these domain names.

practice is all over the world but when its apple its not allowed?

The practice is all over the world but when its apple its not allowed? There are millions of domain names that have similarities to other sites (domains), but when apple encounters it than we need to have an article about this???? Get real apple, its normal.

    WTF?

I guess most places dead people lose their rights

Dead peoples estates can sue for libel/slander in Quebec, Canada.

I wonder what Apple would do if someoe decided to register some derogatory namme including the word JOBS.

My understanding was you can have near passing off names (to living entities) but only if they are used for commerce you then run the risk of losing them.

    Joke

    What's the problem, Apple?

Just set up your owm c*mpeting sex re-tail site. What, your sexy-looking phone can't successfully steer Aple users to legit porn-to-non-porn sales? You could give a helping hand to help your users get off TWICE in one shot... What, don't want to rename the Board to "App Pole Board of Erectors"?

You're losing out on sales potential, Apple.
