There will be more of them than us: Cisco has joined the clamour of voices predicting an explosion in machine-to-machine comms, saying that by 2015, there will be more than two Internet-connected devices for every person on Earth. Yes, it’s Cisco Visual Networking Index time again. In the latest round of its ongoing Internet …

    Unsurprising

"From 2014 to 2015, the amount of traffic will exceed all of the traffic generated in 2010"

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but I am unsurprised that there is forecast to be more annual traffic 4 years from now than there was a year ago. Is this meant to say something like prior to 2010 perhaps?

      Re: Unsurprising

Cisco's version is clearer; the increase between 2014 and 2015 is projected to be greater than the total generated in 2010.

      No you're reading it right

It's just El Reg reporting it wrong, the Cisco article says:

"The projected increase of Internet traffic between 2014 and 2015 alone is 200 exabytes, which is greater than the total amount of Internet Protocol traffic generated globally in 2010."

      I think they just

I think they just wanted one prediction they'd probably get right (short of nuclear war in the meantime).

    So what they gonna do

when they surpass yotta, we going to have compounded prefices? Go out and buy a Mega yottabyte drive or a giga zettabyte or a tera exabyte. There will be tears!

"by 2015, there will be more than two Internet-connected devices for every person on Earth."

Well, there's already significantly more than two for me, so no surprise in my Christmas stocking I guess. How do they plan to force the devices on those that don't want any at all?

Oh... you mean there will be more than twice as many. Well, the only surprise there is that there aren't already more than twice as many internet-connected devices on this planet than there are people. Are they sure they haven't miscounted somewhere?
