back to article Nokia jumps on mobile ad-wagon

In its bid to bring the full internet experience to the mobile device, Nokia will need to formulate a clear strategy for mobile advertising, an important internet revenue driver, but also an area fraught with risks. Nokia said last week it was devising a platform that would avoid the "unseemly" aspects of conventional internet …

    Suggestion for advertisers everywhere..

Take your adverts and stick them up your bottom.

I'm so sick of the advertising plastered everywhere that I now avoid commercial TV and radio channels, block web ads at firewall, proxy and browser level (and block tracking and demographic analysis tools too, if my personal details are now a commodity you can damn well pay me if you want to sell them on to someone else) - hell, I even point-blank refuse to wear any clothes with a visible brand name rather than give 'them' the satisfaction of having me provide free advertising for them.

I can't be the only one so sick to death of the super-saturated ad market that I've pretty much opted out of it.

Absolutely right - I do the same thing. I'm totally sick of seeing this time-wasting mindless drivel - and being subjected to the idea that by flashing some silly advert at me I'll go all Pavlovian and rush out to buy something. Won't ever happen.

Brilliant. You're a genius. Out of interest, how much do you donate to El Reg each month since you block their revenue stream? Oh you don't... what a numpty.

    Same here

I don't have TV service, don't listen to the radio and I don't wear commercials on my clothes. I'm going to not have a cellphone either if they're going to load it with bullshit ads.

I bet we customers will be paying for the bandwidth for them to harass the living shit out of us.

I don't understand the point of this story

The first sentence highlights the problem: "In its bid to bring the full internet experience to the mobile device, Nokia will need to formulate a clear strategy for mobile advertising..." So Nokia is going to create a side-channel on all of its phones exclusively to beam advertising? Does anyone else see the security/comedy aspect to this?

This is such an odd move for Nokia. I thought they were a handset company. Are they no good at that? Can they no longer innovate in this space? I can see an MVNO or retail wireless operator pulling this ("Don't want ads? Pay us $20 extra per month!")

Nokia doing this makes no sense. It's like going to sleep with the IBM of 1970 and waking up to IBM of 2007. Software as a Service? I wanted Big Iron.

    Let people choose

Let people choose, please. Some will like to pay less, let them have ad floating in their phone; other will pay full price to avoid them. I hope Nokia give people choice.

A very good reason to keep your old mobile phone...

Making a phone call? Get a phone not a multimedia tri-band mini super computer that relies on an external company to connect it. Get an oldschool motorola brick conversion ;)

    Or...looking into the crystal ball.

The sooner mobile companies go out of business and we can use Voip via WiMax the better. Why do you think some of the big companies crippled this feature on the N95? The war of big business vs the consumer rages on.

Er, I rather thought that a contribution to the revenue stream was generated only when the on-page advert was actually clicked. Otherwise, surely ElReg will be earning irrespective of whether I see an ad. or (don't) click on it.

Presumably therefore, you slavishly purchase every item you see featured anywhere in an ad. because otherwise you'd be blocking revenue streams too...

    Nokia sent me an email...

I've loved Nokia phones for years and I won't use any other brand. However this turn of events is worrying as I am sure that I'm one of many absolutely fed up with have every bit of space I inhabit commercialised. I don't know why these companies don't realise how much people despise this intrusion. Most ads are 99% shit selling products that are 99% shit. Believe it or not I am capable of identifying my own needs and finding what I need to fill them. I don't need commercials rammed down my throat. Don't these chumps understand that this is my phone and not a conduit to sell me crap?
