    Sing the good news!

Opera Mini is absolutely essential for web surfing on 2G or 2.5G (Edge) connections.

    90% compression

So that's why all the graphics still suck even in High quality setting.

There's just too many compression artefacts around all <img>s. Is this particular Opera using WebP as they were saying in the other article?

I guess it's only good when abroad without a local SIM and paying £3 (or £6!) a megabyte, or maybe when over GPRS.

      Re: WebP

WebP is only used in Opera's desktop browser. The mini product uses it's own compression for transferring the page content to the client device.

    Win Phone...

When is it coming out for Windows Phone? It's one of the few things I really miss from my old Nokia.

      Nokia Opera is real browser

Nokia Opera, the one you had was Opera Mobile. Of course Mini exists for it too.

What MS says to Opera or any developer is, delete the working C code and re-code (!) in silverlight and compete with their full optimized IE.

I really don't think Opera or any mobile developer will do it. Objective C is still a C variant, Silverlight isn't. Apple sometimes demand things but they got amazing marketshare on mobile, just like Google. MS demand such things with 3% marketshare.

        What?

Your comment makes no *grammatical* sense let alone the rest. Who or what is "Nokia Opera"?

    Ipod too

The zoom and pan is much better then before.

Silly Apple... Opera contains adult content... bla bla bla.

Make sure you don't see real Opera mobile

Especially on a Nokia E71 like mine with 400 Mhz (or less?) processor. Can't imagine how it would perform on iphone or ipod having such specs and OS.

It is way worse fact than stupid adult warning, not to allow these companies to ship real versions.

    (almost) useless

The bloody thing doesn't allow me to read/post comments on El Reg. Wonderful otherwise.

    Almost 。。

Almost everyone has the iphone.so it's very smart to release opera mini6 for the iphone users.Hope other browsers also can do it ,such as,avant browser .chrome ,fireox

    chrome has concise interface .

      impossible

It is not like other guys don't release on purpose, you can't ship a real browser on app store. The one you get impressed is built on the exact same idea as J2ME non smart phone Opera ideal for running on sub 300Mhz feature phones.

UCWeb from China may ship as it is also built on same idea.

      RE: Almost 。。

      OK, I'll take the bait.

Granted, it's popular but by what measure did you reach that conclusion? A YouGov poll last month showed that 26% of smartphone users had an iphone, 14% used a BlackBerry and 28% used Android.

Since when did 'a smidge over a quarter' become 'almost everyone'?

    Hmmm

Interesting. I tried opera on my original iPhone, and found it unusable because of the rubbish pan and zoom. I shall have to give it another try.

      Exactly

The zoom system has been updated in this version, test it.

    Finally, XGA support

I was thinking it would never come and I'd be stuck with a fugly blown up 480x320 on my iPad.

Shame that it fails at many Web2.0rhea sites tho.

      Web 2.0

Yeah that's the one drawback to Opera Mini, anything like El Reg's headline banner that steps through the top stories won't automatically update on this. Other than that, it's an incredibly useful app when in low bandwidth situations.

        Is that a bug

        or. . .
